55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Please note that this class is designed for students who are at least 12 years old! Due to the patience and perseverance needed to successfully create these pieces of art, younger students may feel overwhelmed or find that the class is too difficult for them. While I do not want to dissuade anyone from taking this class, I also don't want any student to have a negative experience. If you have questions, feel free to contact me ahead of time! In this one-time course, students learn the basic techniques needed to create original, framed works of art made from pet fur. Topics covered include: ~Frame selection ~Cloth (background) selection and alteration ~Limitations encountered when working with different fur types ~Selecting and creating your design ~Fur manipulation/design techniques I've been creating works of art from pet fur for approximately twenty years. During this class, I'll share the personal techniques I've developed and encourage students to explore their own ideas as well. Our pets are part of our family, but sadly they often do not stay with us as long as we would like. These pieces are a wonderful way to ensure that a part of your pet will always be with you! They also make wonderful, unique gifts that will forever be appreciated by the animals lovers in your lives.
Learning Goals
Students will leave this class with a basic understanding of the skills necessary to create original works of art from pet fur. They will also have a good grasp of what materials are needed to create these pieces and how they can procure these materials economically.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will be using a variety of supplies including scissors and X-acto knives or razor blades. As these items can be dangerous, adult guidance, support and hands-on supervision is highly recommended, but ultimately this decision is left to the discretion of parents or guardians.
Supply List
~FUR! Students need approximately one sandwich baggie full of fur. This should NOT be the fur that you intend to make your final project out of (you will be doing that on your own time after class). For this class, you just need fur to practice with, so find some animal that has lots to spare and see if they are willing to part with a few handfuls! Fur should be clean. If you can, brush the animal before procuring the fur. ~Scissors ~Cutting board ~Sheet of clear plastic (such as the front of a report cover or an overhead transparency sheet) OR a thick sheet of paper ~Sharpies ~X-acto knife OR single-edged razor blade ~At least one piece of cloth that is approximately 8" x 10" (Note: do not use something super coarse like towel - the surface needs to be relatively smooth . . . but not so smooth that it's slippery! Think about how a piece of felt feels and aim for something like that.) ~Small bowl of water ~Tape (clear packing tape is GREAT but really any kind of tape will do) ~Tweezers ~Paper Towels Optional: Glue, waxed paper (or parchment paper or nonstick pan), hole punch
