Art with Ms. Heidi: Starry Night in a Pumpkin Patch 2D Collage

Create a pumpkin underneath a Starry Night sky. In this course we will be learning about the famous painting “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh as we recreate our own version in a pumpkin patch.

Beginner Level
In this course we will learn about the famous painting “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. Learners will create their own Starry Night background using construction paper and crayons before adding the pumpkin cut-out foreground.

10 minutes: Facts and Questions about Vincent Van Gogh.
*Learn facts about Vincent Van Gogh and the famous Starry Night Painting. Look at examples of Van Gogh’s artwork and biography.

10 minutes: Background Study: 
*Learners will study the style and types of lines that Van Gogh used in the Starry Night painting particularly showing movement. Learners will practice similar lines as they create the background using crayon on black construction paper.

10 minutes: Pumpkin study: 
*Learners will look at images of pumpkins as they draw from observation. I will also demonstrate how to draw a pumpkin. Learners will use white drawing paper to sketch their pumpkin before coloring it and cutting it out. Learners can have one pumpkin or as many as they would like.

10 minutes: Light Study: 
*Learners will attach the pumpkin/pumpkins to their background. Discussion of how to use light and shadow. Learners can add moonlight reflections onto the top of their pumpkins using crayon or paint. 

Learners will need to have black, white, blue and yellow crayons (Construction Paper crayons preferred but not required), black construction paper, scissors, glue, white drawing or painting paper and pencil.
