Class Experience

Is your learner interested in pencil sketching? This class is a basic beginner level weekly drawing class. Students will be inspired by a different sketch each week with a wide variety of subjects to keep them creating weekly. Topics will include but are not limited to landscapes, buildings, nature, flowers, animals, fantasy, food, etc.

I will demonstrate step by step the drawing with shading and details. The techniques and skills I aim to cover may include but are not limited to: perspective, values, smooth tonal shading, shading techniques, hatching, cross hatching, stippling, and implied texture. In addition to learning how to do basic sketches, I will demonstrate basic shading to make the drawings have contrast. I will incorporate the demonstration on basic shading into the step by step lesson. The students will be able to mimic what I do.

We will look at relationships between darks and lights, as we practice basic shading. Each class, I will demonstrate, step by step, how to sketch and add variety in shading and using different types of line weight. Your learner will get a great sense of space, shape, composition, balance, contrast, and perspective.

Instruction on techniques will vary from week to week. There will not be a separate lesson on skills and techniques. The instruction on techniques will be incorporated into the step by step lesson of a specific drawing.

I try and wait for everyone before moving on to the next step in a drawing. However, I do have to keep moving so other students do not lose interest in the drawing. Students are welcome ask questions and seek feedback throughout class.

Although each demonstration will be finished by the end of class, students may want to continue working on their drawing after class. Everyone works at a different speed, and it's better to take our time than to rush!

At the end of class students will be encouraged to share pictures of their drawing so that I can evaluate their work and provide any suggestions. Students will also be given an opportunity to provide supportive feedback to their classmates. As always, sharing is encouraged but not required.

It is my belief that with practice, students will learn how to gradually improve their skills. There are no shortcuts in drawing. It takes practice, patience, flexibility and persistence. This will be a positive, supportive and uplifting environment for young artists.

Please note that this is not a technical drawing class as we do not do drawing exercises or use a grid in this class. However, we do occasionally use guidelines to draw our project. This class is mainly focused on completing a specific drawing. The goal of the class is to have your learner walk away with a drawing they are proud of! We will have fun and learn art skills along the way!

The only prior skill required is the ability to follow detailed visual and verbal directions. Not all of the instruction will be verbal. Learners will need to follow visual cues as well.

I hope to see your learner in one of my classes soon!

*If this class interests your learner please sign up. I will take the slot and teach even if it is only one learner!

Learning Goals
~Students will gain exposure to art techniques and vocabulary through step by step projects.
~Students will show their creativity by adding unique details to their artworks.
~This class is for budding artists who know that art isn't about making an exact replica of the teacher's art piece.
~Due to the variety of skill sets in the class, I try to pace the class to meet all students' needs, but this isn't always possible.

Parental Guidance
This is class is direct instruction with some room for free expression. I do not coerce participation; learners can choose to interact as much or as little as they desire. I also do not force learners to follow along. However, most learners appreciate the structure my lessons provide. Ultimately, it is up to your learner to decide exactly how they want their art to turn out. Students are also free to ask questions and make comments at any point. Some of my classes are very talkative and some of my classes are really quiet. It really depends on the dynamic of the group.
