Class Experience

In this ongoing class, we will spend time each week looking at an artist (past or present) and their work. Students will learn the vocabulary of art, elements of art history and the steps to effectively discuss artwork. Discussion will be led by the teacher and follow the specific process of art analysis. (Observe, analyze, interpret, decide.) Students will be encouraged and expected to participate in the discussion. We will also work on appropriate conversational behavior (i.e. listening, asking questions, responding, respecting differing opinions).

Discussions will revolve around a short biography of the artist provided orally by Ms. Lia and through videos. We will then observe and analyze a specific work of that artist. We will talk about the lines, shapes, colors and composition. Finally, students will use critical thinking skills to make interpretations on what the artist was trying to communicate through this piece, which will link to what they have learned about that artist and time period. Students will also get to decide if they personally like it or not and provide their stance on WHY.

I have worked as an elementary art teacher for years and LOVE getting to see learners connect with art.

Week 1 : Wassily Kandinsky
Week 2 : Vincent Van Gogh
Week 3 : Frida Kahlo
Week 4 : Pablo Picasso
Week 5 : Georgia O'Keefe
Week 6 : Edward Hopper
Week 7 : Roy Lichtenstein
Week 8 : Yayoi Kusama
Week 9: Banksy
Week 10: Leonardo da Vinci

Each class will stand alone, with a completely unique subject of discussion. You may come and go as desired.

All artwork and artist discussions will be appropriate for young learners.
Students will be encouraged (but not required) to make their own art inspired by the artists throughout the week.

** Teacher will not hold this class without the minimum number of students enrolled regularly. Discussion between students is an essential part of the learning in this course. If you have a schedule request, please contact the teacher OR schedule it a few weeks out so that others can see it and enroll! :)
