Class Experience

Experience various portable mediums suitable for nature journaling at home or on the go
Create a habit of observation and questioning through our nature studies
Learn to represent subjects in nature accurately, but also quickly and expressively, through subjects such as birds, plant studies, trees and more.
Learners have the option of creating a journal page based on the lesson sending it to teacher for feedback during the week. The suggested homework is optional based on parents' wishes. Students may be asked to collect an item from nature for observation and drawing during course.
-Art/Nature Journal- This should be something with paper suitable for watercolor and mixed media. You may choose whatever journal you prefer or one you already use, but you will be more successful if you choose something that isn't too small (adult hand size or larger is recommended) and something that will tolerate the use of water. -Watercolor set- must include at least a basic set of colors -Graphite pencil- I recommend not using a mechanical pencil, but a regular 2B pencil is just fine. Drawing pencils are also great. -Ink pen- you may use more a variety of sizes, but at least one. Recommended: Micron (05), Arteza, or a regular ball point pen. -Eraser -Colored Pencils- basic set is fine, as long as it has a variety of the basic colors. -Pencil sharpener -white gel pen (optional for finishing highlights on drawings) -Printed photo references that will be sent after enrollment. Here is a link to John Muir Laws suggested materials for nature journaling. You do not need to buy all of these supplies or these brands of supplies, but it is a helpful resource-
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We may occasionally refer to a few various books and field guides, as well as the children's book that I have authored/illustrated,
Little Birder: A Field Guide to Birds of the Alphabet.
Your child is welcome to bring related field guides to class.
Some books might include:
The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling by John Muir Laws
The National Audubon Society Field Guide Set: Birds, Wildflowers, etc.
