Students will explore and discover the art and architecture of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Mali, Ancient Rome, Ancient China, and Ancient Greece. Subject matter will focus on the ancient history of these civilizations with a narrow focus on art and architecture. Discussion of marginalized groups, racism, or violent historical events will not be discussed as this class focuses on art and culture appropriate for this age group. Students will learn the general practices of archeologists while exploring specific information about each ancient civilization to include forms of art and architecture.
Mrs. Helms has received training from ADL (Anti-Defamation League) as a Peer-Diversity Trainer/Teacher. She is the Cultural Awareness and Responsive Education representative for her school. As such, she has specific training through Prince William County School Board of Education to provide diversity training, responsive education, and cultural awareness in the elementary setting. She has trained educators at two elementary schools to total over 80 teachers. She is also a licensed teacher in the state of Virginia. As a licensed elementary educator, she has received content training to deliver instruction for elementary level core subjects to include: science, social studies, writing, reading, and math. Social studies standards for third grade reflect the learning covered in this class on Ancient Civilizations. Mrs. Helms has delivered this course content for over 4 years in the state of Virginia. History 3.2 The student will explain how the contributions of ancient China and Egypt have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, inventions, the calendar, and written language. 3.3 The student will explain how the contributions of ancient Greece and Rome have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government (direct and representative democracy), and sports. 3.4 The student will describe the oral tradition (storytelling), government (kings), and economic development (trade) of the early West African empire of Mali. In addition, Mrs. Helms is Egyptian. She has many personal artifacts, videos, and photographs from her travels. She has photographs and videos from her personal travels of Greece, Rome, and Egypt.
Time to complete their art projects will differ per learner. However, this is an optional activity and extension of work time.
Materials for each class will be posted in the classroom to include a printout and step by step directions. Most materials are common art supplies and will not require additional shopping: playdough, black construction paper, white paper, dirt, black acrylic or watercolor paint, colored pencils/markers, colored construction paper
Individual assessments available upon request.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Students will complete art projects and use the following supplies: scissors, construction paper, string, play dough, dirt/mud, paint. Please ensure a clean work space and supervision at your discretion.
We will use Google Earth for virtual explorations of geography and architecture. We will use history channel to refer to artifacts and current archeological sites.
