Students will be able to finish the art project in class. They will be introduced to an exploration-based website that they can use to explore various math concepts, if they wish.Assessment
Each learner will be assessed informally, with feedback given in class. Parents will also receive a short message with comments about their child's learning in the class. The focus of all assessment will be on what the student has learned and can do rather than what they can't.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 3
Math meets Art! In this class, students will learn the concept of fractions through an arts-based lens. They will learn the skills of representing fractions, comparing fractions, and ordering fractions, while playing with an exploration-based website and making a beautiful art project. They will learn that math can be fun and engaging. I am a current elementary school teacher who has had great success teaching children fractions, including in an online setting. This is an introduction-based course that is suitable for children who have either never been introduced to fractions or have little understanding of what fractions are. After taking this class, students will be pointing fractions out to you wherever you go!
Learning Goals
Students will learn the following:
- the meaning of a fraction
- how to identify factions in pictures
- how to represent fractions in pictures
- how to compare fractions using pictures
- how to order fractions using pictures
- that math and art have more in common than they think

Parental Guidance
The use of the pattern shapes page on the math learning centre website must be approved by a parent. This website is an educational resource designed for children. The pattern shapes page requires no log in and does not collect personal information.
Supply List
Learners will need blank paper, coloured construction paper, a pencil, scissors, a glue stick, a ruler, and pencil crayons or markers. A square piece of cardboard might be fun to have but is not a necessity. If you do not have any of the materials, you can buy any of them at a local dollar store for four dollars or less.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello OutSchool families! My name is Chelsey and I am an enthusiastic, and creative elementary school teacher, youth theatre director and summer camp leader. I hold a degree from the University of British Columbia in English and Theatre, and another degree in Elementary Education
with a focus in Indigenous Education from the same university.
Here on OutSchool, I teach performing arts related classes, classes that incorporate academic curriculum but in engaging and creative ways, and arts-based classes. My classes incorporate such things as visual arts, drama, STEM projects, games, experiments, and challenges. They are highly interactive and hands-on.
In all of my teaching experiences, my first priority is to focus on the social-emotional well-being of my students, making sure to build strong relationships and a sense of community where they can feel not only comfortable to be themselves but also highly valued, just as they are. I strongly believe that children and youth learn best through exploration, creativity, and opportunities to engage their curiosity. Most of all, learning should be fun and focus mostly on learner-centred experiences that are hands-on and open-ended, rather than a more teacher-centred approach. This helps develop a life-long love of learning that I believe is vital for all of us.
I have years of experience leading children in camps related to visual arts, performing arts, and nature - three things that are personal passions of mine. In addition, I have taught children's drama classes for years and even directed children and youth in four (and counting!) full length theatre productions. This is my seventh year teaching elementary school and I truly love it. I have taught all grades between Grade 3 and Grade 7. I also spent a year teaching in a mostly online environment due to Covid concerns and this helped me learn how to maintain my teaching values in an online environment. My favourite thing about being a teacher is getting to know the unique personalities of each of my students, and nurturing their strengths and abilities. I truly believe that all children have special gifts they are just waiting to share.
I can't wait to connect with you!
