Class Experience

Every artist knows that the secret to improvement is practice. However, the most effective practice is a kind that is structured and with the support of other artists. It is also more fun to improve your art and drawing skills when you are practicing while chatting with friends who are also working on their art. That's what this class is all about! Join us as we focus on sketching action poses of people in photographs. While I will provide photos for each class, learners are not restricted to these. They can practice with any photo as long as it doesn't violate any Outschool policy or make anyone in the class uncomfortable.

*Multi-learner classes will be discounted from the listed price (upon request). Invite a friend!

We’ll start class by getting to know each other, our supplies, and warming up our art muscles. I’ll explain my approach to observing a pose, identifying how I want to convey what I see, and finally representing it on paper. Our goal for the sketches in the class will be to capture the flow and action of the figure without being overly concerned about capturing the exact proportions or form of the subject. Together, we will work on some 1-minute and 2-minute sketches. Now that we have a feel for this technique, we’ll work on a 5-minute and 10-minute sketch. We’ll discuss how to build from our quick sketches to add details and structure on top of our lines of action.

Throughout class, your art guide (that's me!) will be on camera and I’ll have a secondary camera showing my process as I follow along with each activity. I will primarily be using an art pen (it shows up better on camera than pencil) or charcoal on paper. You are welcome to use whatever supplies you are comfortable with. I recommend several pieces of paper 8.5”x11” or larger. A regular pencil, soft lead pencil, or charcoal are all great choices for the drawing tool.

No experience is required although this is a more challenging topic that is geared towards teens with some previous drawing practice. Be sure to have art supplies ready for this interactive lesson.

**Please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, concerns, or requests for different meeting times. I'd love to hear from you.
