This class showcases masterpieces from ancient, medieval, classical, modern and contemporary art that include themes of mortality and life-death in the images of mummies, skulls, skeletons, masks, monsters, ghosts, witches, spiders, and such; however, special care has been taken to exclude grotesque imagery. A list of the works shown include among others: Royal Egyptian death masks and mummies, Aztec skulls and sculptures, ancient mosaics of skeletons, a Roman satyr sculpture, Medieval illuminated manuscripts depicting The Three Living and the Three Dead; from classical to modern art: Pieter Bruegel, Munch, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Nolde, Hokusai, Picasso, Dali, Rivera, Kahlo, Klee, Schiele, Baselitz, Warhol, Hockney, Bacon, Oviedo, Botero, Louise Bourgeois, Michael Locascio, including funny street art and even an awe inspiring Nebula in the sky that is the spookiest of them all! While some of these masterpieces may be visually strong, the class is kept academic and light, emphasizing history, cultures of the world, style and media.
