Art - From Start to Scarf: Crochet Camp for Beginner Crochet
What's included
5 live meetings
4 hrs 35 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this 5 day camp students will learn basic crochet strategies (chain, turns, single crochet, adding pattern, changing skeins, tassels, and yarn care) to complete a beautiful homemade scarf! Students may make a small scarf for a pet or doll or a larger scarf for themselves or a loved one. If your student enjoys giving homemade gifts during the holiday's, this camp gives them plenty of time and practice master foundational skills to create beautiful gifts. This camp is perfect for new or beginner crochet students. Just remember, patience is key with the first steps. We will spend a lot of time creating a good foundation for our scarf (chain, tension, single crochet). This will be the entire first meeting. Because the only way to gain proficiency is through practice students are expected to practice outside of our class time. If students do not practice independently as well as in class they may not finish their project within 5 days. Practice, practice, practice. For experienced students this section (meeting 1) may feel repetitive, but remember these foundational skills take many years to master fully AND they are used every time one begins a project. Just like riding a bike, it will not be perfect the first time. I often see students start their projects over (on their own accord) after a little practice. That's wonderful! We are learning a skill that will continue to develop over time. In 25 years of crocheting I still practice chain, tension, and single crochet with any new yarn, new hook, or new project. I STILL PRACTICE. It is important that your student knows that the first part of the lesson is the hardest part. Think of biking to the top of a hill then riding to the bottom. Crochet steps are the same and in this class we are along for the ride together! I am happy to show and reshow each step. It's what I'm here for! If your student can make it "up the hill" so to speak, I promise there's a respite waiting on the other side! Each day's goals are broken down below. If we have time to cover more in class I will extend the lesson also. Please feel free to message me with questions between sessions. The class playback will also be available shortly after class for your student's reference. I have 2 cameras that will allow your student to see stitch detail for his or her reference. I also mark stitches with extra hooks just so they are easier to see on camera. There is a list of supplies, yardage estimates, and my recommendations for each attached. All of the supplies can be easily found at Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or most Walmarts. The basic supplies are inexpensive and will last forever. Yarn will vary in cost depending on your students choice. DAY 1: We will have a short introduction about crochet, yarn, hooks, patterns, and techniques. Then we will jump right in. Student will- *Experiment with different yarn holds and hook holds to find a comfortable position and good yarn tension. *Practice finding good tension in CHAIN. *Practice SINGLE CROCHET into a foundation chain. GOALS: *Lay the foundation chain *Lay the first row (into the foundation chain) DAY 2: Students will - Begin class with any questions or concerns from their continued practice (progress report). Student should have completed the FOUNDATION CHAIN and 1 ROW before class. Remember, this is the MOST IMPORTANT step of the project. If this first chain and row are not done correctly the whole project can suffer. It is important to take time and do this part right. Don't rush. This process is the same whether we are crocheting a scarf or a blanket. VERY important. * Troubleshoot any errors and review hold and stitches. * Practice stitch recognition (for counting). * Practice counting stitches (to maintain length or pattern). * Practice turns with SINGLE crochet with turns. GOALS: * Count and turn row. * Complete 5 rows independently. DAY 3:- Begin class with any questions or concerns from their continued practice (progress report). Students should have 5 rows completed before class. Students will - * Count stitches for consistency (as your students skills progress their tension will adjust. We will review COUNT and TENSION to keep our project as straight as possible.) * Practice correcting missed stitches if applicable * Practice half double and double crochet with turns. * DISCUSS PATTERN and STITCH RECOGNITION with multiple stitches. GOALS: * Correct tension/ mistakes and maintain consistency. * Troubleshoot mistakes. * Turn accurately DAY 4:- Begin class with any questions or concerns from their continued practice (progress report). Students should be around halfway through the length of their scarves before class. Student's will - * Review counting stitches, correcting mistakes, troubleshoot any issues. * Show changing skeins/ changing colors (at the end of a row and in the middle of a project; carry colors if time allows). * Show hiding ends * Crochet GOALS: * Complete project length before end of Day 5. * Hide ends of all skein changes. Day 5: - Begin class with any questions or concerns from their continued practice (progress report). Students should have completed the length or be really really close to finishing the length of their project by the end of this class. Students will - * Finish the length of their project. * Add tassels if desired. * Review any final questions about skills covered. * Apply finishing touches to scarf. * Present scarfs to class (if time allows). * Review storage and Care. GOAL: * Complete a professional looking, homemade project in class. * Master foundational crochet skills that are necessary to complete many to other projects.
Learning Goals
Students will master foundational crochet skills and crochet a beautiful scarf to the best of their abilities.

Supply List
All supplies can be found in the craft sections of Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and the Walmart. The supplies can also be ordered via Amazon. - A set of crochet hooks are generally inexpensive and often include a case. This will allow students to complete a variety of projects. I prefer sizes G, H, I, J and medium weight yarn (weight 4) for projects like this (blankets or scarfs). - Scissors (nothing special here) - 500-700 yards of medium weight yarn (#4). This allows us to complete a 6-8"x50-65" scarf with tassels and boarder. (I recommend using MEDIUM WEIGHT YARN (#4) in class to learn. Students can use a heavier weight or lighter weight if they would like. It can be more difficult to handle. They will need to adjust their hook size too. There should be a hook size recommendation on the yarn label. Yarn can vary tremendously. Check both the weight and yardage on the paper label of the yarn. AGAIN, I recommend a #4 weight to learn with.) I find it is a good idea to buy a little bit too much, keep my receipt, and return what skeins I don't use. This ensures that my yarn is all from the same dye lot. For a scarf this may only be a concern if your student chooses a few colors or a speciality (high quality) yarn. Be sure to check each label for YARDAGE and YARN WEIGHT as the same yarn in different colors can vary by both yardage and weight. NOTE: Silky yarn is far more difficult to work with and is not a good option for beginners. Also, yarns with extra strings, inconsistent gauges, or loosely assembled can be difficult for learning. RED HEART regular super saver yarn is a good baseline. If you choose a different brand use RED HEART for comparison. This yarn is very easy to work with and it lasts many years (I still have 20+ year old blankets.). Students may use any number of colors they choose.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been crocheting since I was 5 years old. Once mastered this skill is impossible to forget. I once crocheted an entire full sized blanket, with a pattern, in total darkness (counting stitches by feel) during an overnight car ride from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Tyler, TX. I was about 10 years old. My father and I hosted a Blanket Drive charity for around 10 years also. We taught, crocheted, and delivered thousands of crocheted baby blankets to NICU wards in Oklahoma. I love the joy I can bring with crocheted gifts (baby blankets for family; hats and throws for friends; even a Dr. WHO? scarf for my sister... it was very long.) Although we will complete a scarf together in class, these skills will prepare students to complete any number of projects.
