Class Experience

Welcome to a Winter Wonderland! In this class, your child will create, move, and have an amazing experience with two highly educated and experienced teachers. All of our Winter Workshop series classes begin with a high-energy winter workout followed by a calming session in the art studio.

Benefits of Combining Art and Exercise:
Art and physical education are usually thought of as different domains but integrating them can be of much benefit to children. For kids reluctant to learn about art, using physical activity will have them jumping at the chance; for kids who prefer not to participate in gym class, the artistic components of our lessons will keep them engaged and active. Check out the learning goals for more!

Who It's For:
Perfect for learners who love creating artwork, like getting out of their chair and getting active, or BOTH! This class is great for those who love a high-energy workout or those that may be hesitant about exercising. Miss Shannon always keeps it upbeat and makes sure each child is feeling successful. In the art studio, Ms. Gerri guides beginner artists through the project while also challenging our more advanced artists to learn new techniques. She ensures that every child leaves with a project they are proud of!

How It Works:
Class always starts with some socialization and checking in to see how everyone's feeling! Next, we warm-up and get our bodies ready for exercise. I break down the exercises, add in games and activities, and we learn about keeping our bodies healthy! I’ll need your strong muscles to help save Frosty! Bring your energy, grab your water bottle, and meet me in the gym!

Once we’ve finished the first half of our class, it will be time to switch gears- from athlete to artist!

Our winter art project will focus on drawing skills, using simple lines and shapes! We will draw Frosty from a fun, unique perspective, learning how to use oil pastels to create blends and layers of colors. As time allows, we will also draw a sweet winter animal like a penguin or reindeer. Artists will be shown examples of completed artwork and given clear, step-by-step instructions to complete the drawings and understand the overall goal. While we are drawing, we will talk about perspective, shape, and form and how the pastels work for the best results! Grab your supplies, and a steamy mug of cocoa, and meet me in the studio!

Why We Teach It:
You can expect your child to receive lots of encouragement and praise throughout our workout and art project. They will leave feeling confident about themselves and excited about fitness, and with a beautiful piece of art just in time to display for winter! We love helping our learners create a happy and healthy lifestyle in the most fun way possible, through art and exercise!
Learning Goals
I want to encourage a love for physical exercise and health by pouring my own love and passion into them! I seek to do this by providing an engaging and upbeat workout that your child will be talking about long after it ends! -Miss Shannon

According to the American Heart Association:
Active kids are more likely to have:
-a healthy weight
-stronger, healthier bones and muscles
-better heart and brain health
-improved brain function, including memory, attention and problem-solving
-better school attendance and academic performance, especially in math, reading and writing
-lower long-term risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and some kinds of cancer
-less stress and fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression
-less inappropriate and distracting classroom behavior
-improved mental health and psychological well-being, including confidence and self-esteem

My goal is for artists to have fun creating winter-themed, colorful artwork using simple supplies and to learn new techniques they can experiment with on their own. -Ms. Gerri

She has taught K-12 graders for 14 years in a variety of subjects, including a monthly art program that focused on art elements and the art masters. She enjoys teaching simple concepts that allow her students to experiment, explore and express themselves in new ways. Ms. Gerri loves discovering how one technique can have unexpected results and even be used in new ways. Sharing these colorful ideas with young artists makes the process even more exciting- we often learn from each other!
