Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this one-time class, we will create a stunning winter scene with white crayon and watercolors, creating a resist effect that is amazing every time! First, we will observe and discuss the science of how wax and water resist each other and therefore the watercolor paint will not cover the areas where there is crayon. Because of this, the resist creates an effect that both amazes us and adds interesting aesthetics to the scene. We will also observe and discuss what a landscape is and how to apply the elements of art and principles of design while creating the scene to get the most out of the crayon resist effect. In addition, we will utilize all of the space on the paper, including the background, to complete the composition. The learners will choose their own images and colors within the landscape, so each learner's artwork is unique. After our artwork is complete, we will engage in a discussion in which each learner will have the option to share their artwork with the group and talk about it. This concluding activity promotes positive discussion, strengthening communication as well as critical thinking skills.
Learning Goals
This lesson provides several positive learning outcomes. By observing, discussing, and creating a winter landscape, the learners are also able to gain a deeper understanding of art in our world around us. They will learn how to apply the elements of art and principles of design while creating the scene. Science is also integrated into this lesson through learning about wax resist. Other learning outcomes include positive communication and critical thinking skills. Group discussion during the presentation and activity promotes positive communication, as does sharing the artworks in the concluding discussion. Additionally, the learners will utilize critical thinking skills by applying, analyzing and synthesizing their prior knowledge and experiences into the class discussion as well as into the artwork they create.
