(FYI - this is an expanded version of my prior shorter single-session class - you can check out feedback for that here: https://outschool.com/classes/make-your-own-book-choice-1-what-can-i-make-with-just-one-piece-of-paper-20ijYg2o#usvmadas0y ) What's the best thing about making a book? Deciding how to fill it! Learning to make your own books means you'll always have plenty of places to put your own stories, poems, artwork, mementoes and photos. Join me for a series of fun hour-long workshops to learn simple bookbinding techniques and make your own beautiful non-traditional books - then fill them with whatever you imagine! In this introductory class, we'll start simple: I'll teach students to make 8-page mini books using only one single sheet of paper! No staples, no sewing - just a few folds, a cut, and almost like magic, they'll have a book in their hands. We'll practice a few times to make sure they can do it on their own, and then we'll go on to explore some of the many ways to decorate and modify single-sheet books. For example: -attach several single-sheet books together to make a larger book; -use decorative paper or washi tape to create ornamented covers; -cut out a "window" to reveal a drawing within After we complete that, I'll introduce them to a few other single-page book variations. I'll do live demonstrations with the camera focused on my hands so participants can follow along with me, step-by-step! At the end of the class, students will have several small books to continue decorating and fill...but best of all, they'll have the ability to make these books ever after! My goal is that they can leave the class able to teach someone else how to create these. To be successful in this class, kids need to be able to cut and fold well. I'll review effective techniques during the class to help with this and any future projects. **You will need to have certain supplies available for this class - please check the "Learner Supply List" section of the listing! OUTSCHOOL/CLASS RULES OF NOTE: 1) Have a working webcam! I must see students on camera at least at the beginning of class, and if possible, I prefer that cameras stay on as I can't help kids effectively if I can't see their artwork. Please make sure that your webcam is functioning before entering the classroom. 2) Although siblings are welcome to share computers, all learners attending the class need to be individually enrolled. 3) Parents may stay nearby, but they must stay offscreen during class.

Supply List
MATERIALS LIST: (Those with an *asterisk* in front, you must have available for class. Others are optional) -PAPER: *8.5"x11" (copy/printer paper) or 9"x12" or A4 (most standard construction paper). It can be the same or different colors; but having more than one color available provides more visual interest. (A NOTE ON CONSTRUCTION PAPER: cheaper construction paper with a very fibrous feel tends to fold very poorly and create less-than-satisfying results. I recommend using Tru-Ray construction paper, by Pacon, but you can of course try with whatever you have.) *OPTIONAL but nice to have: 12"x18" construction paper (or 11"x17" copy paper) or A3 paper *-SCISSORS *-SOMETHING TO FOLD WITH: popsicle/craft stick OR ruler OR non-serrated smooth a butter knife *-RUBBER BANDS, at least 3 or 4, all the same size (thin, not too long) *-GLUE STICK *-SCRAP PAPER to protect the table while using the glue stick! *-PENCIL *-COLORED PENCILS AND/OR MARKERS to write and draw OPTIONAL MATERIALS LIST for decoration: -Some colored/decorative paper scraps - optional, but can make decorating more fun. -Washi decorative tape -Stickers or other embellishments
