In this one-time class, we will create Magic Dough! With a few simple ingredients, we will combine, mix, and create our own playdough which can be used for many projects. First, we will observe and discuss how combining different ingredients makes something new. Next, we will gather our ingredients and begin the process of combining the salt and the flour, discussing ratios. We will observe and discuss the new mixture, and predict what happens next. This lesson provides several positive learning outcomes. By creating the dough, the learners are able to understand how science and art are blended in our world. By observing and discussing several concepts, the learners are also able to gain a deeper understanding of art in our world around us. This lesson also incorporates science by creating a new mixture out of the ingredients. Other learning outcomes include positive communication and critical thinking skills. Group discussion during the presentation and activity promotes positive communication, as does sharing the artworks in the concluding discussion. Additionally, the learners will utilize critical thinking skills by applying, analyzing and synthesizing their prior knowledge and experiences into the class discussion as well as into the unique soap they create.
Flour Salt Water Mixing bowls Food Coloring (use sparingly to prevent staining - see parental guidance) Scents or essential oils (use sparingly to prevent irritation - see parental guidance) Flat surface to roll and shape dough (parchment paper works great to spread out on workspace)
