What's included
1 live meeting
50 mins in-class hours per weekGrading
There will be no formal assessment; however, we will take the time to hold up our drawings and celebrate and encourage each other's progress several times throughout the drawing process and again at the end of class. I'll watch for opportunities to give more guidance or tips throughout the lesson.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
In this weekly ongoing class we'll have lots of fun chatting about our bird watching experiences while we create artwork about birds. Since we cover a new bird in each project that usually takes us 2 classes to complete, your child could jump in at any time between birds. Just message me to see which class dates we are beginning a new project. We'll use a realistic style for most of our lessons, but occasionally, we'll have some fun using our imagination (based on realistic bird parts) to create a drawing or painting of a bird that does not really exist. Most of our lessons will focus on a specific type of bird, however, in some of our lessons we also study how to draw birdhouses & feeders, bird baths, tree limbs, nests & eggs, and other things in their natural habitat. We'll also work on a variety of natural body positions for birds throughout our lessons. We cover a wide variety of birds in this class. Here's a peek at some of our topics from the past plus what's coming up next! 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR: Backyard Song Birds & some Birds of Prey SUMMER 2022: Waterfowl FALL 2022: Birds of the Rainforest WINTER 2023: Birds of the North & South Pole (Arctic & Antarctica) SPRING 2023: Backyard Birds SUMMER 2023: Seabirds & Shorebirds/Waders FALL 2023: Birds of the Rainforest (Cassowary, Galah Rose-Breasted Cockatoo, Green-Headed Tanager, etc.) CURRENTLY IN SPRING 2025: Birds of North America March 5 & 12: Dark-Eyed Junco March 19 & 26: Bluebird April: Rose-Breasted Grosbeak and Eastern Towhee May 2025: We'll continue with North American Birds (Classes will be cancelled from this schedule if we have had no learners sign up at least 24 hours in advance of our class. The first 4 projects will remain in this order of topics even though the dates will be pushed forward depending on student sign up dates.) We will use drawing materials, watercolor paints, oil pastels, and acrylic paints in these lessons. Look for a note on our classroom page a couple of days in advance of each lesson for which supplies we need for the upcoming class. Then have the supplies gathered & ready before your child signs into our class each week. I'm very excited that Outschool allows us to expand a project across more than one class meeting! So our painting lessons will be divided into 2 parts with our drawing steps in the first part one week and our painting steps in the 2nd part the following week. This will help our class end on schedule more often instead of needing so much extra time after class to finish each week. It will also help us feel comfortable spending time in the details of the drawing, too, and allow me to lead lessons on some of the birds that I've had to skip in the past because they would need more time than one class session. No prior drawing or painting experience needed because I'll lead each child step-by-step through each project and still include options along the way, too. Even though students enjoy talking about their birding experiences, it is not necessary to have seen any specific birds to be successful with these art lessons. Students will show us their drawings or paintings several times during our lessons and at the end of our classes so we can celebrate and encourage each other's progress and success. This also helps me watch for opportunities to give more guidance or tips throughout the lesson as needed. Please also note that occasionally our class may need a few extra minutes to finish our lesson and will be based more on the natural pace & needs of the students in our class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the anatomy of a bird and its identifying features as we draw together.
Students will learn drawing, shading, blending, and textural techniques in drawing and painting mediums.
Other Details
Supply List
We usually take 2 classes to finish each bird project concentrating on drawing tools in the first lesson and usually adding color with paints in the next class the following week. DRAWING SUPPLIES pencil eraser sharpener paper (sketchbook or drawing paper) coloring tools (crayons or oil pastels and colored pencils) Tip: We do not use markers in this class because they are not well-suited for blending and shading. Optional: Your child may become interested in spotting different species of birds and recording their sightings in a journal, but this is not required. PAINTING SUPPLIES for OCCASIONAL WATERCOLOR PAINTING: pencil, eraser, sharpener 9" x 12" Watercolor Paper (or similar size such as 8"x10") A set of Watercolor Paints (simple set of 8 or 16 colors in oval pans instead of tubes) A few Watercolor Paint Brushes in different sizes Water in an open cup, can or jar Paper Towels Oil Pastels in a variety of colors (be sure they are not the type that can be blended with water--it would say it on the package if it is) Optional Substitution: (If your child does not already have a set of oil pastels, crayons could be used instead.) SUPPLY LIST for OCCASIONAL ACRYLIC PAINTING: ONE 8"x10" White ACRYLIC PAINT SURFACE (See Several Options Below): Stretched Canvas, Canvas Panel/Board, or Acrylic Canvas Paper (What are the differences? . . . Stretched Canvas has primed (coated white) canvas stretched over a wooden frame & stapled to the wood. Canvas Panel/Board feels more solid like the canvas is mounted/glued to a stiff cardboard. Acrylic Canvas Paper is thick, coated paper that is flexible but won't warp and tear as easily as other papers and comes in a pad of multiple sheets.) ACRYLIC PAINTS: (not tempera, not watercolor, not oil) I suggest as least 1 ounce of several different colors including Blue, Red, Yellow, White & Black plus also Green, Orange, Purple & Brown although your child may not choose to use all of the colors. (Thicker acrylic paint in tubes are the best consistency for our painting techniques. If possible, try to avoid using the thinner acrylics in plastic bottles that sound watery when shaken.) PAPER PLATE to use as a paint palette. (Optional to use a plastic paint palette instead or even a disposable pie tin) ACRYLIC PAINT BRUSHES in a variety of sizes. Include a couple of medium size ROUGH Flat Brushes (looks like a square on the tip but bristles are rough and a little prickly to the touch. Also include a couple of very small SMOOTH Acrylic Brushes (1 very small Round brush like a pencil tip shape and 1 slender Flat Square Shape) Please avoid brushes that are flimsy and bend when put under a stream of water. (Those are watercolor brushes instead of acrylic brushes.) WATER in a metal can, plastic cup or glass jar. PAPER TOWELS

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Middle Tennessee State University (Bachelor of Science Degree in Educ: Art K-12 & Elem 1st-8th grades)
Hi, I'm Susan Garrison, a professional artist who also loves teaching kids! I've been drawing & painting all my life and teaching children for the past 3 decades. After earning my BS Degree in Art Education K-12 from Middle Tennessee State University, I've enjoyed teaching children 2D & 3D art lessons at my own art studio, online, and in public and private schools in grades K-12 in Tennessee and South Carolina. One of my specialties has been curriculum development at each of those schools. On weekends, my husband and I even work as a team to DJ weddings and receptions.
I love breaking art projects down into bite-size pieces of simple lines & shapes for children as I lead them through the lesson step-by-step, while still encouraging options along the way so that every piece is unique. Choosing a variety of my classes will help your child develop skills and techniques for creating realistic pieces as well as tap into & build upon the beauty of his or her imagination & creative mind. My class offerings include a variety of styles & use many types of art tools & surfaces. Some classes focus on famous artists & their styles to inspire our artwork. Blending those experiences help form a well-rounded young artist.
I delight in helping children enjoy the whole creative process that leads to a lifetime of creativity and not just the end results of a single painting. A child's imagination is valued greatly and will be encouraged in our lessons.
