Class Experience

We will be drawing heads and faces. We will learn all different kinds of eyes, mouths, lips, noses and how to show emotion through facial features. We will be sketching and learning techniques for shading and mapping the face. We will not focus on perfection but rather have fun learning, understanding proportions, shapes, shading and creating character will just a simple pencil.

This course may be repeated, no two courses will be the same because no two artists are the same. Each student will have a chance to show their work and get instruction on how to create sketches that show their own style.

You can draw what I'm drawing or draw your own thing. You can bring a reference photo and draw from that if you prefer. I will help you no matter what subject you choose. The main idea is to draw together, improve our art technique, and have fun!

Learning Goals

Students will learn basic sketching techniques, how to draw different head poses, shading, drawing facial features and, if time allows, hair. Goal is to learn and have fun together!

Supply List
Plenty of sketch paper, good quality pencils (sharpened; 9a and 9b preferred), kneaded eraser (you may prefer to sketch in colored pencils, that's fine but we will be focusing on drawing style and shapes, as well as light and dark). Art supplies can be bought anywhere but I find art supply places like Dickblick.com have best selection, quality and prices. You don't have to spend a lot of money on them. A good art pencil is under $2. A pack of kneaded erasers, not much more. If all you have is basic number two pencil and paper, that will work too, but using the best supplies leads to less frustration for the student and a better result.

A couple of q tips for blending and a pencil sharpener are helpful.

Bring a reference photo if you want to draw something special or don't want to draw the picture the class chooses. You can take a screen shot to use for reference with your computer or camera phone once we make a selection.
