Class Experience

In this 5 day summer camp we will be creating something new each day. We will be discovering and experimenting with all of the elements of art such as line, form, color, texture, shape, and space. We will be using minimal supplies so that it is easy to prepare for each day. In fact, most or all of the supplies are things that you already have at home. I am enthusiastic about creating art and patient when teaching. Each student learns at their own pace and I do everything that I can to make sure that each student feels successful. I have taught Kindergarten through 6th grade art in person and on line so I am very comfortable with the format. All learners are welcome! Everyone can create beautiful art regardless of their creative ability!
Monday - Learn how to draw a self portrait - In this lesson, I will be doing a step by step lesson on how to create a self portrait. Students will need paper, a pencil, and something to color with. Colored pencils work great for this lesson! Element of art focus - color, line, and form
Tuesday - Make animals out of numbers - In this class, students will learn how to create animals out of the numbers 1-5. So simple but yet so creative! The same supplies are needed for this day. Element of art focus - color, line, and form
Wednesday - 3 dimensional roller coaster - In this lesson, learners will be able to create a fun and creative 'roller coaster' out of paper scraps. The supplies needed for this class are any type of paper strips or scraps, a regular sheet of paper or construction paper, scissors, and glue. Element of art focus - form and space
Thursday - Wild flowers made with warm and cool colors - In this lesson, students will be able to create flowers and understand the difference between warm and cool colors. I will be doing a directed draw of the flowers and discuss warm and cool colors. There is so much flexibility with this lesson and learners can get as creative as they would like! The supplies for this lesson are paper (thick if possible), a black crayon, water colors, and a paint brush. If water colors aren't available, then crayons, markers, or colored pencils will work just fine! - Element of art focus - Line, form, and color
Friday - Magic water color and hidden message creation - In this lesson, I will be showing the learners how to create a hidden message on a piece of paper and then use water colors to reveal it to create an abstract piece of artwork. We will then add salt to our work to see the magic that happens with our paint. The supplies needed will be construction paper or water color paper, water color, paintbrush, white crayon, and salt. Element of art focus - texture and color

Hi! My name is Jana Beckstead and I have been teaching for 21 years. I started my career teaching 3rd grade for 2 years and then moved on to teach 2nd grade for 5 years. Following that, I taught Kindergarten (5 years), 4th grade (5 years), and Kindergarten through 6th grade art (3 years). During the height of the pandemic, I taught Kindergarten through 6th grade virtually. This year I am teaching 7th and 8th grade reading and writing in middle school. I also have 5 children of my own and 2 grandchildren. My husband is in the military and we also have 4 sweet dogs and a bearded dragon named Mona.

I graduated from Arizona State University with my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies. I worked for a newspaper at that time in advertising. When my children started school, I myself went back to school and received my Post Bachelor Certification in k-8 education. I also received my Early Elementary endorsement, Structured English Immersion Endorsement, and Art Endorsement. Along with my certification, I have attended hundreds of hours of professional development in the school district that I teach in. I absolutely love teaching; it is my passion. I can't wait to share my knowledge and creative abilities with your children through the love of reading and art.
