ART CAMP! Tessellations: Art, Math & the Magic of Making Amazing Patterns
Class experience
How did pattern-master M.C. Escher create his artwork? How did Islamic artists create infinite, complex patterns that seem to continue on forever? It's not as impossible as it looks! Tessellations, the interlocking, repeated patterns, are behind the magic. Tessellations elicit wonder in their complexity. In this camp, we'll demystify (somewhat!) how they work by reviewing some ways in which we can create tessellating pattern pieces that create amazing repeating interlocking patterns. There...
Students will explore variations of tessellations, and learn that they have to follow certain rules but that if you follow those rules, they contain almost infinite possibilites for creativity! They will learn how to create several different types of tessellations.
I always adored Escher's work and spent hours looking at it when I was younger. Part of its appeal for me is these incredible interlocking tessellations! I love the idea of opening the door for students to understand a bit more how Escher and other artists create them, and to helping them to create their own. I have been teaching one-time tessellations classes successfully here on Outschool for a while, and just expanded to a multi-day class.
Homework Offered
Homework isn't required, but filling in these pages can end up being quite complex with decoration, and students may wish to keep going after class! I would love it if they'd share their finished work! I will not be 'evaluating' since students can do their own evaluations - if the pattern continues endlessly, they've created a working tessellation! Obviously if it does not work, I'm happy to offer corrections.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

Grades Offered
1 file available upon enrollmentSUPPLIES NEEDED FOR CLASS: **-3"x3" square pieces of cardstock (you can cut from an index card or file folder or very lightweight food box) - something that is heavier-weight, yet still easy enough for your child to cut on their own, since they'll be cutting into this to make their tessellation templates. (If you have more than two, they can explore more tessellations on their own after class.) (PLEASE NOTE: this really needs to be a very sturdy paper or cardstock. You can't make an effective template using regular lightweight paper.) ***I WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW MANY YOU MAY NEED ON ANY GIVEN DAY** -Hexagons and/or triangle (I will post a pdf in the classroom that you can print and cut) **I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN YOU NEED** -A ruler -Scissors -Scotch tape -A pencil -Sheets of white paper on which to draw/color their tessellating patterns - at least 8.5"x11". Ideally, construction/drawing paper, so it'll take color nicely, but printer paper will work if that's all you have! -Colored pencils or markers for decorating
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
As stated in the description and supply list, please be aware that during the art-making portion of this camp, your learner will be using scissors.
Calling all art explorers! The act of creation shouldn't be limited to professional artists. Artistic expression is for EVERYONE - something you should feel entitled to do, without judgment, your whole life long. Unfortunately, many of us have...
