US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Through the guided painting process, students will learn how to use watercolor and acrylic techniques to paint two different types of skies with landscape silhouettes. My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective. The examples in the picture are only suggestive; students may also request a particular favorite if time allows. My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time! At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is. More detailed information regarding this class can be found in the syllabus.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to blend watercolor paint to create a sunset
Students will learn wet-on-wet techniques to create a painting of a galaxy
Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 1 WeekLesson 1:
Painting a Sunset
We will discuss the colors commonly found in sunsets. The teacher will demonstrate wet-on-wet painting with watercolor paints, using sunset colors. Students will use what they have learned to create one or more sunset paintings.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Galaxy Sky
We will discuss the night sky and how the Milky Way Galaxy can sometimes be seen by the naked eye in very dark locations. The teacher will demonstrate a slightly different wet-on-wet technique for painting a night sky with the nebulous imagery of a galaxy.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Silhouettes
We will discuss the properties of a silhouette and practice a few ideas in pencil. Once students have their designs for their silhouettes figured out, we will begin painting the first one on the first painting.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Finishing the Paintings
We will finish the first painting if needed and paint the silhouette on the second painting. If time allows, teacher will also show students a simple technique for dotting the galaxy sky with stars using white paint.

As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down drawing and painting lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
