Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Through the guided drawing and painting process, students will learn how to use watercolor and acrylic techniques to create a beautiful sunset painting.

My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective. The examples in the picture are only suggestive; students may also request a particular favorite if time allows.

My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time!

At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is.

More detailed information regarding this class can be found in the syllabus.

Syllabus

2 Lessons
over 1 Week
Lesson 1:
Painting the Sunset
Students will learn and practice "sunset order," or the part of the spectrum that is commonly visibly during a sunset. Students will practice painting with watercolors in a wet-on-wet technique that enables them to blend colors and hopefully reduce or prevent the appearance of solid lines of color. Students will learn about silhouettes: how and why objects appear black and solid with no discernible details when the light source is behind them.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Painting the Silhouette
Students will select an appropriate shape, structure, landscape or landmark for their silhouette. Students will either paint their silhouette or draw on black paper, cut out and glue. Details, such as very thin lines and tiny shapes, can be added with a thinline black marker if desired.

As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down drawing and painting lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
