ART CAMP: Oil Pastels 101, Drawing With Wonderful, Messy, Blendy Oil Pastels!
Class experience
Oil pastels are NOT simply messy crayons - there's so much more you can do with them! (The photo in the class listing is a 6-year-old student hard at work on one of his oil pastel creations. Look how beautiful it is!) WHAT IS THIS CLASS? In this fun four-day camp, young artists will explore and create art from their imagination with a messy and delightful art medium: oil pastels! I emphasize process over product, and we'll be doing a lot of experimentation - my goal is for them to gain...
I'm a teaching artist with a BFA in illustration and a MAT in art education, and I've been teaching art for more than 20 years. My ultimate goal for all learners is to help them embrace the joy of exploration and possibility - process, more than product.
WHAT SUPPLIES DO I NEED? -oil pastels (if you are buying a new set, I recommend Crayola) -pencil -white drawing or construction paper, 9x12 -black or very dark construction paper, 9x12 -for day 4: watercolor paper (highly recommended), or very heavyweight white paper -but watercolor paper is highly preferable, as the effect with oil will be superior to the effect you get on heavyweight drawing paper or printer paper. Oil tends to soak into those. -paper towels -toothpicks or something similar with a somewhat pointy or scratchy edge (eg a skewer, a coffee stirrer, a plastic fork) -q-tips/cotton buds -a small amount of oil (baby oil, olive oil, any kind of cooking/kitchen oil)
Oil pastels can be messy! Although I'll be discussing ways to try to minimize mess, it's a bit inevitable. You may wish to put down some kind of table covering, especially on the day that includes actual oil, and have a trash can nearby.
Calling all art explorers! The act of creation shouldn't be limited to professional artists. Artistic expression is for EVERYONE - something you should feel entitled to do, without judgment, your whole life long. Unfortunately, many of us have...
