Class Experience

Students will gain practice in the following skills:
Drawing, tearing, cutting with scissors, gluing, making collage arrangements
I've been teaching art for more than two decades and one of the things I've always loved most is watching how excited kids can get just doing something simple like creating new shapes with pencils or collage. Although kids can certainly get a lot of satisfaction out of creating a "product" that looks a certain way, I wanted to offer a class that was focused on the exploration that is such an important part of art-making. Come explore with me!
I'll send a week-specific supply list to those who register, as you won't need all of these every week, but: -two sharpened pencils, since one point may break (Note: if you have "art" pencils, like an ebony pencil or a darker/softer pencil instead of a #2 pencil, those are good for this because their lines are a bit more variable! But, they're absolutely not required) -a black crayon and/or or black marker (NOT a sharpie - something nontoxic like a crayola) -white paper (I always prefer heavier-weight white drawing paper, but printer paper will work if that's all you have) - I suggest 12x18 for drawing (if you have bigger paper available), and 9x12 for collage -black construction paper -some construction paper in a few other colors - not many -scissors -a glue stick - if possible, a fat one instead of the little skinny ones - they tend to be easier to use with better coverage (but skinny works, if that's all you have, just make sure it's not dried out!) --- PLEASE have a glue stick handy rather than white glue if possible, since we'll be discussing how to use glue sticks. If you only have white glue, we'll make do but a glue stick would be preferable. -scrap paper to cover the table when glue sticks are being used (you can use newspaper circulars, the back of junk mail, almost anything except actual newspaper, because newspaper print will come off on gluey fingers and get all over their hands and artwork)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
2 hours 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We'll be using scissors during the last few days. As mentioned in the listing, if your learner has minimal scissors experience, please stay nearby for at least the first day of scissors use as we review all the safety and usage rules.
