In this class, we will discuss, practice, and draw a dragon using colored pencils, markers or crayons. Day 1: We will cover a historic look at dragon lore from different cultures, looking at images, and begin practicing drawing basic shapes the head and neck. Students will be encouraged to continue practicing on their own as they are able. Day 2: We will look at examples of dragon wings, and practice drawing, coloring and shading an outstretched wing. Week 1Lesson 1Dragons in History and CultureWe will cover a historic look at dragon lore from different cultures, looking at images, and begin practicing drawing basic shapes the head and neck. Students will be encouraged to continue practicing on their own as they are able.Lesson 2Dragon WingsWe will look at examples of dragon wings, and practice drawing, coloring and shading an outstretched wing. Students will be able to choose specific details for their wings.Lesson 3Dragon Limbs and TailsWe will look at images of arms, legs, hands, feet, and tails, and practice different ways of drawing them, and select favorites for our final copies.Lesson 4Dragon ScalesWe will look at and practice drawing different types of scales, and pull together our choices for all of the dragon body parts to begin the final drawing.Lesson 5Completed DragonsWe continue and finish the final dragon. If your student needs more time after class has ended, they will be encouraged to take their time, complete the drawing on their time, and will be invited to upload an image of their final drawing in the classroom when finished.
I LOVE to draw! I love mythical and fantasy creatures, and as an art teacher, I have several years' experience in breaking down what seems like complicated drawing techniques into student-friendly, step-by-step processes, while allowing for and encouraging their own creative ideas to shine through.
Sketchbook and/or inexpensive paper for practice pencils, erasers, sharpeners colored pencils OR watercolor paint OR illustration markers Good quality drawing paper OR watercolor paper (80# or heavier works best!) Ultra-thin Sharpies or fineline black markers images of dragons (from books or Google Image searches) for visual study. Step-by-step drawing ideas may be provided as necessary after the first class session. Students are encouraged to do google image searches of dragons, and print if possible, for visual references.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
