This means your child will receive pre-recorded video lessons they can watch at their own pace on whatever schedule works best! Each video lesson will utilize a top view camera to show up close, each step in detail. You can do all of the lessons in one day, spread them out over weeks or months, or do them in any order you like! CLASS DETAILS AND SUPPLIES In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of drawing. We will find basic shapes within each animal to build an animal "map" to put our images together step by step. At the end of each lesson, I will cover basic shading techniques to add 3 dimensionality and realistic details. Each video tutorial will be approximately 20-30 minutes long, weeks 2, 3, and 4 are broken up into Video 1: The Drawing Video 2: Shading. As with all of my classes, if the student's art work takes a different turn, I fully encourage them to go with it and see where it leads! Creativity and the art process is always more important than the product! All drawings will be demonstrated via a top view camera using artist pencils and white drawing paper. Students are free to add any materials they wish to enhance their drawings. Some options include charcoal, colored pencils, marker, watercolor. RESPONSE TIME You can expect responses to questions or feedback on drawings within 1-24 hours of messaging me. I try my best to give thorough feedback in a timely manner to assist you however I can. Since these classes are accessible to your learner for 1 year, I have given a 3 month window to answer questions or receive feedback. *Please note: It is still possible I will response beyond this timeframe but it is not guaranteed. Hello Outschool community!
I am April Taylor. I live with my amazing family in New York and I have been teaching visual arts on Outschool for 3+ years. I’ve been told I was “born to teach”. On Outschool, I teach art classes for children ages 8 and older. I I have classes in acrylic and watercolor painting, realistic drawing, and clay work. I hold a Bachelors degree in Art Education and a Masters degree in Professional Studies, where I focused on Humanistic and Multicultural Educational practices. I have 18+ years teaching experience in Prek-8 in virtual and in person settings.
As a teacher, I like to keep class fun, upbeat, and flexible. During classes, I encourage balance, in terms of focus and discussion/communicating with myself and classmates. Interaction, open discussion about planning, and ideas/suggestions for their own or other's art is highly valuable, as is, quiet focus and concentration. In every class, I teach using a step by step approach to demonstrate how to do the skills and use the materials. I feel this provides a solid foundation for students to master skills and then put them to practice once they become more confident and independent. I also encourage creativity and encourage students to add or omit elements from their work that make it unique to them. I would much rather have 8 different drawings at the end, than exact replicas of mine! If a child wants to take their project in a different direction, I fully support and encourage them to do so!
When I am not painting and working with clay, I love being out in nature, spending time with my husband, two hockey loving boys, and our dog child.
I look forward to meeting your child and helping them grow their love for art and learning. I hope to see your child in my classes soon!
