Picasso's Sculptures Made of Junk: Discover Art, Repurpose, and Make a Craft!

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
In this class, students will learn about one of Picasso's great passions: collecting... junk. They will also discover how Picasso with the power of his imagination made a new life for his found objects by creating the most unusual sculptures. We will discuss how repurposing junk could be good for the world in more than one way. We will "spy" everyday objects in some of Picasso's most famous sculptures. In the second part of the class, students will be invited to create their own sculptures...
Students will: • learn some facts about Picasso • learn (or review) what artists do • learn (or review) what sculpture is • practice their observation skills • exercise their fine motor skills while working on an art project • use their imagination
Materials for Craft: An assembly of recyclable objects. Here are some suggestions. Choose 1 OR a few of MAIN items: • boxes that could be easily cut (like boxes from cereal, cookies, tea, soap, cosmetics, toothpaste, etc.) • paper towel rolls (OR toilet paper rolls) • plastic containers (yogurt cups, cottage containers, fruit cups, pint size plastic berry baskets, etc.) • plastic bottles of any size A few ADDITIONAL items (any of them will do): • Magazine or newspaper pages • Wrapping paper • Construction paper • Old greeting cards • Stickers • Jar lids or plastic bottle caps • Any other small items that could be glued or attached with scotch tape (examples: beads, buttons, pompoms, paper clips, bread bag clips, etc.) Basic items: • Glue • Small scissors • Scotch tape • Markers or crayons • Play dough or modeling clay
For the craft portion of the class, parental guidance is required for younger students (ages 4-5) for the use of scissors and other materials. Parental guidance is recommended for older students (ages 6-8). Please note that as per Outschool policy, parents should remain off camera Thank you.
