Supply List
Students will need 1. Sketchbook (moderate to large size is best). One way paper quality is categorized is by "pounds", the highest quality marked up to 400 lbs. I suggest looking for sketchbooks that are marked at at least 140 lb. As cost can be prohibitive, please don't worry about getting a high quality sketchbook at this point. It's much better to use a lower quality sketchbook (I have several like that!) than to not have one at all...and it will work just fine for this class! 2. Pencils - graphite and/or charcoal 3. An eraser - I use the pink pearl brand 4. A pencil eraser Optional materials: 1. Compressed charcoal sticks, soft or extra soft (Generals is a good brand) 2. A ruler 3. A few inexpensive paint brushes

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I'm Miriam. Thank you for your interest!
(Classes and interests)
I teach art, writing, reading, and science classes. I love helping my students find true interest in different subjects and one of my biggest goals for all my students is for them to have real satisfaction about their work and learning.
(Background)
I have a bachelors degree in interdisciplinary science and a minor in art, having a deep love of both subjects.
Veterinary technician (nurse), independent artist, private school teacher, intensive reading teacher and coach, and substitute teacher are some of the different jobs I've held. As a volunteer I've also enjoyed being able to work with several different wildlife animals. I also have a history of working with horses. I know my interests and professional background seems varied and eclectic, but I've found there is a common thread throughout all of it. Each job and experience has lessons that help me improve the others.
(Teaching values)
Every student is different, but every student (like every person) has a desire to do well, succeed, and to be accepted. I work to facilitate ways for each student to feel this acceptance and success.
I have spent so much of my life and continue to be a student, and there are things that I love and find easy when learning... and things that I hate and struggle with. So when it's my turn to teach, I remember my frustrations and feelings of failure to help my students have smoother journeys.
("Something fun and personal")
I'll just tell a favorite joke.
A photon checks into a hotel. The hotel manager says "Do you have any luggage?"
"No, I'm traveling light."
