To remove the stress of what is sometimes a very daunting course of study, your learners will not have tests, quizzes, or formal grades in the class. Instead, I utilize positive verbal critiques to provide feedback and encourage improvement. However, if grades are requested I will provide them via rubrics that will suggest a grade. Learners progress will be gauged by the completion of their assignments, execution of techniques, contributions in critique sessions, and their class presence (being on-time, listening when I am speaking, and how they communicate with peers).Grading
includedClass Experience
Sketchbook Share Club is a casual, student-led on-going class, which means that it meets weekly and subscribers are charged accordingly every Sunday morning. Learners may cancel their subscription at any time. For this class, that means that learners will have the opportunity to share their recent artworks with a group of like-minded artists and draw along with them. Young artists may share any artwork they have worked on within a month of the class, whether it be a doodle, sketch, or finished pieces. Sketchbook Share aims to make art more collaborative by giving young artists a friendly space to share their artwork, art techniques, and tips & tricks about art! Every week class will begin with a new drawing exercise such as: a prompt, blind contour drawing, composition sketches, mark making exercises, or value scales, among others. This five to ten minute drawing exercise will get creative juices flowing that will help focus our brains on the art! After our exercise is over, young artists will share their recent artworks with the class. Each artist will share one artwork at a time, and we will go around the group as many times as time allows. When an artist shares their work, they will be expected to give context about the work (What kind of art is it? What was it made with? What was the inspiration or idea behind the work? Is it complete or a work in progress? What else is there to say about the artwork?) and tell everyone what kind of feedback (Suggestions Please!, Just the Good Stuff, Only Sharing!) they would like to receive. Then, their peers will share their thoughts on the artwork. During discussion, learners will be encouraged to ask questions about the artworks and share tips, tricks, and methods. Sketchbook Share Club will provide a Critique Guide that covers the basics of formal art critique, a Feedback Guide to help young artists frame their conversations, and an Elements of Art Guide that outlines the seven elements of art with helpful descriptive language and examples. Schedule is subject to change based on section and learner needs. Since this is a learner-led, discussion based class, this schedule outlines the exercises that will be taught each week. Fall 2023 Session: Week of September 11th | Blind contours Week of September 18th | Simple Object Drawing Week of September 25th | Zentangles Week of October 2nd | Shading Methods: Hatching and Cross Hatching Week of October 9th | Shading Methods: Stippling

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am delighted to be able to offer classes that emphasize fine art techniques through the lens of observational drawing. Observational art is a method of learning to draw with three principles in mind: understanding of the subject, building looking skills, and practice of artistic technique. Through this method and practice, learners can draw anything. Completion of my courses will result in a learner who is engaged with art and understands basic art technique. Even students who are not aspiring artists have much to gain from drawing, including improvement of hand-eye coordination and hand dexterity skills.
Along with my bachelor’s degree in art history and studio art from a premier liberal arts institution in Ohio, I also have been teaching since 2016. My online teaching career began on Outschool in 2017. I have taught homeschoolers, unschoolers, and undergraduate students of all ages. My background in art history means that my classes are created with an understanding of historical precedence- I’m teaching what I know works! Many of my classes include examples of important artworks from masters for students to examine and learn skills from. In addition, my many years of teaching art have helped me curate concise and logical drawing curriculum that young artists can easily pick up and apply to their work. Every art class I teach hopes to provide learners with all the knowledge and support they need to grow as an artist.
