There will be NO LIVE MEETINGS. This is a flex course that is meant to be completed at the worker's own pace within 15 weeks. In this semester-long, 15-week, flex art course, we will working on an array of art mediums and techniques. Unit 1Painting/DrawingPainting/Drawing4 lessons4 WeeksWeek 1Lesson 1Happy Accident PaintingUsing watercolor and ink, we will explore different techniques and play with the idea of non-constructive painting with two different mediums. We will also discuss the work of artist David Dewey.Week 2Lesson 2Sunset SilhouettesThis lesson will use acrylic paint and black construction paper to create a multi-media art piece. Abstract shapes, lines, landscapes, or portraits can be used to create these silhouettes. We will also discuss the work of artists Kara Walker and Kumi Yamashita.Week 3Lesson 3Woven Lanscape 1 of 2In this 2-week project, painting and woven paper will be used to create a unique piece. This will segue into our next unit, collage. In the first week, we will paint multiple pieces of paper using abstract, landscape, or portraits as our subjects. We will also discuss the works of artist David Samuel Stern.Week 4Lesson 4Woven Landscape 2 of 2In the second week of our project, we will decide how we would like our projects to be put together; which painting will be the main focus, foreground vs background? We will then learn the technique of weaving those papers together.Unit 2CollageCollage4 lessons4 WeeksWeek 5Lesson 5Tissue Paper Paint Collage 1 of 2In this project, we will be using tissue paper to create a "painting". The first week will be devoted to brainstorming and sketching out our ideas onto paper. It can be a landscape, portrait, or abstract. We will also discuss the work of artist Kris GroverWeek 6Lesson 6Tissue Paper Paint 2 of 2In the second week of this project, we will begin tearing the tissue paper and applying it to our sketches using glue water.Week 7Lesson 7Fabric Assemble CollageUsing fabric of all sorts (ex: old t-shirts, yarn, burlap, wool, old blankets, etc.) we will create a unique collage. This will be like no collage you have ever seen or made. We will also discuss the work of artists Leni Levenson Weiner and Barbara Shaw.Week 8Lesson 8Media CollageThis project is all about creating a media collage using things like, old magazines of all sorts (family, home, food, fashion, etc.). Labels from boxes, bottles, and cans (canned vegetable labels, chip bags, etc.). It can have a specific subject or be random. We will also be discussing the art of Kurt Schwitters and Eugenia Loli.Unit 3ClayClay4 lessons4 WeeksWeek 9Lesson 9Coil Pots (Clay)As we move into our clay unit, we will explore how to make coil and pinch pots. We will also talk about what clay is and its history. Our artist for this week is Pablo Picasso.Week 10Lesson 10Clay FigurinesThis week, we are going to be working on our clay figurines and talking about artist Paul Smith.Week 11Lesson 11Clay Heads/Masks 1 of 2For the next two weeks, we will be creating clay heads/masks. You can make one very detailed mask, or many smaller masks/heads- as in a series. We will also discuss the work of artist Johnson Tsang.Week 12Lesson 12Clay Heads/Masks 2 of 2We will continue to make our clay masks/ heads.Unit 4PrintmakingPrintmaking3 lessons3 WeeksWeek 13Lesson 13Block Printing 1 of 2Moving into our printmaking unit, we will learn about printmaking and create our block and print using specific tools. We will also discuss the work of artist Andrea Lauren.Week 14Lesson 14Block Printing 2 of 2We will continue cutting into our blocks and creating prints.Week 15Lesson 15Mono printingThis project is all about creating a print using mono printing. We will try many different techniques and tools to create a unique print. We will also discuss the work of artist Karen Lederer.

There are no grades for this class. There is, however, a Certificate of Completion that will be presented at the end of the semester. This is contingent on completing all of the assignments.
