* Please note, I am not currently listing this class specifically designed for younger students. I am teaching a version of this class designed for kids 10-14. If you have a younger learner, I do accept younger students in that class, I just want you to be aware that the class is designed for a slightly older student. However, I've had lots of 8 and 9 year olds take that class and do just fine. Here's the listing for that class: https://outschool.com/classes/around-the-world-with-mr-clark-A5YGdgnx?usid=Q4WOXRMZ&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link -- Each week we travel to a new destination. We learn about a new place as if we were planning a trip to that location. What's Mumbai like? What would we want to see in Beijing? Imagine a drive around Iceland. Why are the Danes so happy? Each week before we "depart for our destination, we start with some basic questions. Is it in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere? The East or West? What's the line that divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres? What's the line that divides the Eastern and Western Hemispheres? What continent are we going to? What language is predominantly spoken? Are we flying into a large metropolitan area or a remote location? How will we get around? What type of money is used. Do we need a VISA or will a passport be sufficient? What are VISA requirements? What is the culture we are stepping into? What would be good to know before we get there so we don't needlessly offend someone? What will we want to see while we are there, and why or how have these sites become important? Who are some important figures in the history of this destination? What are natural wonders unique to this area and what wildlife might we expect to see? What is the climate and what should we pack for our hypothetical trip? What are we going to eat? What foods are customary? Each week as we journey to a new destination, that location makes sense based on where we were the previous week. We might travel to India from England, because of the historic ties between those countries, or from China to Mongolia because of the geographic proximity. If we were going to visit Antarctica, we'd go a place like Argentina the week before as a "launching off point" for Antarctica. This is an interactive class. Student are invited to participate and make suggestions on what they want to do, see, learn about. I spend a significant amount of time preparing for each class, but we'll do Google searches during class to look up certain things along the way if a student poses a question I don't know the answer to. I am their guide and their leader on our journey around the world.
Learning Goals
Students will develop an understanding of global geography, historic trade routes, political ties and colonization.
In each weekly class, students will learn key:
1. People
2. Places
3. Things
Over time, as pieces come together, they'll develop a tremendous bank of knowledge in the field of social studies. Please note, this class is deigned for kids ages 6-9. The goals are more modest in this class than they are in the same version of this class I teach for kids ages 10-14.
This is a true social studies course in how it is interdisciplinary. We cover geography, history, culture, religion, political structures, natural wonders and wildlife, foods. What would you want to do if you went to Rio de Janeiro or Tokyo or the Gobi Desert? These will be the things we talk about as we go to those places. Over time, the kids will be exposed to lots of different cultures, religions, political structures. They'll have a sense for where these places are in the world. They'll learn tips and clues for finding different places on a map.
Additionally, a goal with this class is to inspire a love for different places and cultures around the world and to encourage a curiosity to explore and learn about the world.

Parental Guidance
Parents, please note that this class is designed for kids ages 6-9. This is a 30 minute class. I teach this same class for older kids, ages 10-14 and that class is 55 minutes long and goes a little deeper. You're welcome to choose whatever class you think is right for your learner -- I just want you to be aware of the differentiation.
Supply List
I provide a worksheet before class that students can fill in as we go along. I also provide additional notes after class with more information and links to related articles and videos.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
We live in a big and fascinating world and one of my goals with my classes is to help kids develop an interest and appreciation for the world around them and different cultures. My classes draw from my own experiences as a world traveler. I've visited and lived abroad in seventeen countries. Much of what we do in my classes is the same type of research I would do on a destination before I would travel to that country. I'm also the former deputy director of the historic home of President Ronald Reagan and in 2010 was a candidate for United States Congress.
