Class Experience

My goal for this class is to create a social learning environment where students can discuss topics related to the New York Yankees baseball team. This course is not restricted to just fans of the team, but is available for everyone who wants learn more about the team and its players.

This is a discussion-based class that helps students build speaking and listening skills. Students will be taught history about the team featured, the major league depth chart, recent transactions and news that have impact on the New York Yankees.

Topics will change for this class to keep the content fresh.

Some examples of discussion topics include:
Who is the top hitter for this team?
Who is the top pitcher (starter or reliever) for this team?
Do the Yankees have enough pitching to beat the Rays?
What is the teams greatest strength/weakness?
Who are the organizations top prospects?
What are the latest trade rumours?

Students will have opportunity to provide their input and engage with the others in this platform.

Students do not need to have an in depth knowledge about the team, however it is important that they have a keen interest in baseball and willingness to learn and engage with others.

If a student has any relevant information related to the team we are discussing, that would be great. For example baseball magazines, baseball cards, programs etc. However this is not a requirement of the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
With over 25 years of coaching experience at the amateur, collegiate and international levels, I appreciate that statistics are an important part of the sport.

For the past twelve years, I have operated Last Raps Baseball, a North Vancouver, BC, based business that provides baseball instruction to those who are aged 8 to 18 years old.

Though I hold formal education with an Honours degree in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English, and a Bachelor of Education degree, I have not formally taught in the classroom. Baseball has been my life long passion, and I have chosen to do my teaching between the chalk.

At the conclusion of our camps and clinics, we give baseball cards to the children who attend our instructional sessions. I believe that the way children become engaged in the sport is to play, watch and listen. Providing baseball cards to the children help them learn about the sport on many different levels.
