Class Experience

Students will learn how to multiply 2-3 digit numbers using an area model. Students will recognize how place value is used in multiplication. Learners will understand that the 2 in 23 x 13 represents 20 or 2 tens. After learning how to set up the area model and discussing place value, we will practice area model multiplication together. Students will understand how to multiply multi-digit numbers in an area model. Students will also be able to recognize place value relationships.

Several blank or lined pieces of paper, sharpened pencil (with an eraser), and a ruler (optional), are materials needed for this lesson.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

An exit ticket will be given at the end of the lesson to check for student understanding

40 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
