Class Experience

Does your child love to play games? Are you not sure if your child is ready for the fifth grade? Come to my classroom where we will play a fun game show-style game to find out if they are ready for fifth grade. This game includes fifth-grade mathematics questions and will cover multiplication, divisions, fractions, decimals, geometry, conversion of measurements, and word problems. I will ask students questions, and they will answer using a different app, Kahoot. Kahoot is interactive software that allows students to answer questions all at the same time. Students will race against the clock and each other to answer the questions correctly. Students will receive praise for correct answers, and the top three winners will be recognized at the end of the game. I will also give students hints as needed to help them remember the correct answer. This class is best suited for children that are attending fifth grade in the fall of 2021. Come and join me as we get ready for fifth grade!

This class does require the download of a separate free app, Kahoot, which you can download to your phone or iPad. Kahoot is a free student-response tool for administering quizzes; we will be using it as a game show. In order to make this class fun and exciting your child will need two devised; one for zoom and one for Kahoot. Please make sure you do this before the class starts. It is recommended each student have both Zoom and Kahoot open during this lesson, therefore, having a second device (such as a cell phone or tablet) for Kahoot will give your child the best experience possible.
Learning Goals
Your child will be asked questions based on the Common Core State Standards that children should know before they enter the fifth grade. This game will cover mathematics questions in a game show-style game. Keep in mind that these questions may differ from your specific state standards as states implement their state standards at different rates. While this is not a traditional instructional class, I will go over questions that students miss, and after the game, the Kahoot app will allow players to go over questions they missed. This class will give you a snapshot of some skills your child can improve on over the summer to be better prepared for fifth grade.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and welcome to my class. My name is Teacher Wendy. I have worked in education for over ten years including substitute teaching and as an intervention specialist. I have been teaching online for over six years; I am certified in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I have an A.A. in History at Austin Community College and a B.A. in History, with a minor in English at Texas State University. I am a homeschool mom to three kids, two are differently-abled. I have struggled with dyslexia my whole life and I know personally how hard it can be to learn simple things that others take for granted. It is my personal mission to help people like me that are differently-abled learners.

I am most passionate about teaching tween students, however, I love teaching anyone with a heart to learn. When I am teaching tweens I find it’s best to be authentically interested and curious about their ideas, feelings, and experiences. Actively and purposefully listening to what they share gives me a better idea of how to support them. I prefer teaching skills through a multisensory approach and I live for those moments when a student's "light bulb goes off". Learning doesn't have to be boring, and by incorporating a little fun and lots of silliness, learning can be fantastic! I really enjoy educating tweens and entertaining, I call it edge-uh-tain. I like to incorporate positive encouragement and praise to assist my students and help with class management. Won't you join me on this wonderful and whimsical ride? I hope to see you in my classroom!
