Art can be fun for kids! The study of art is not just the study of aesthetics or beauty; it is a study of a form of human communication throughout time and cultures. Art is a universal language and its meaning can be different for each viewer from different time periods and cultural influences. By studying sculpture throughout each period, we can see how humanity both progressed in their skills, but also in their desire to express their experience of life during their time. Some pieces are highly expressive and some are subtle, but rich with information. This class explores the progression of art from the very first renderings of the human form into sculpture, through the iconic Classical and Hellenistic, and ending in the Medieval period.

1- Beginnings of Art. Prehistoric, Geometric, and Archaic
2- Things are getting interesting now! Classical and Hellenistic
3- Warts and all. Roman and Byzantine
4- Why is everyone wearing so many clothes? Dark Ages and Medieval

I will be speaking live to the students, as well as, using a wide variety of photographs from my travels around the world. I welcome questions before, during, and after the class. A class that interacts with the material learns it at a deeper level. The class will begin with a main question or idea for the students to keep in mind, as they will see the theme reappear throughout the class. The classes will all end with guided discussion based upon the main question and any interesting questions or comments. This will not be ‘dead air’ time, students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and questions.

Learning Goals

This class will provide a solid foundation in Art History, Art Interpretation, and the Role of Art in History and Politics from the Ancient World to the Medieval Period. Each student will come away with a good working knowledge of these different art periods and and understanding of the power of imagery. Imagery is a tool that is still in use today, from Napoleon to Trump. And both demonstrated how the power of imagery still plays a powerful role in everyday life.

Parental Guidance
All images in this course are my own photographs. They are all from highly respected museums such as The Vatican Museums, The Capitoline Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Museo Napoleónico, The Cairo Museum of Egyptian Art, The Naples Archaeological Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (to name a few). While the name is fun, it is referring to the fact that the discussion of sculpture always involves examining the musculature of the form. After giving many, many lectures and museum tours on this subject, it became clear that this would be a fun and apt name for this class.
