Students will listen to an engaging reading of Jory John’s silly story "The Cool Bean." We will work on comprehension skills, and students will write and draw what it actually means to be cool.

Description

Class Experience

This class will teach reading comprehension skills using 1st and 2nd grade Common Core literature standards, while also taking a social emotional focus as we learn what it means to be cool. The class begins with an interactive read aloud, involving asking and answering questions and teacher modeled comprehension skills. Then, we will discuss the central message and spend time writing, drawing, and sharing ways that we can be cool in our own lives (hint: cool looks a lot like kind). My...

Students will improve their reading comprehension by asking and answering questions about characters, the setting, and important events, as well as identifying the central message.

Students will practice social emotional skills by redefining what cool means and brainstorming ways they can be kind to others in their own life.

Students will need a pencil, crayons, and a printed copy of the sheet provided with the Welcome Message.
