Class Experience

This 3 day class explores the arctic tundra. Each day, we will learn about the landscape of the tundra and the different animals that call it home. Class will contain discussions, videos and art projects everyday. By the end of camp, we will have completed a drawing of an arctic tundra. The first day, we will discuss what the arctic tundra is and what makes it so unique! We will discuss the characteristics of the ecosystem and what plant life looks like. We will learn about the arctic hare and the caribou. We will end class by beginning our drawing of the arctic tundra and the hare and caribou. The second day will consist of learning about snowy owls, musk ox, arctic fox and the arctic wolf. We will learn about the adaptations of each of these animals and what makes them so important in the ecosystem. We will finish class by adding these animals in the arctic tundra drawing. Finally, on the last day, we will learn all about polar bears, narwhals, the walrus and beluga whale. We will explore the food chains that these animals are apart of and their adaptations. Finally, we will add these animals to our arctic drawing and complete our version of the ecosystem!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there! My name is Addison and I am an Environmental Educator. I currently work at an animal rescue center where I lead public tours, run field trips and go into LAUSD classrooms to teach students about wildlife, the environment and science. I majored in Agriculture and Environmental Education at UC Davis. It is my passion to teach students about the natural world around them. I was a Lead Instructor at UC Davis in a club called Sprout Up, which went into local public schools and taught 1st and 2nd graders environmental education. In addition, I was an Education Interpreter at the Aquarium of the Pacific where I engaged with the public and informed them about the marine animals they were encountering and the ocean. From these experiences, I have developed classes about wildlife and the environment that I will be offering here! I am a very patient, fun and encouraging teacher. I believe that making a connection with students is important and leads to more engaged and happy students. Finally, I do have a pet leopard gecko, named Jeb, that will definitely be making appearances! Can't wait to meet you all!
