Class

What's included

8 live meetings
12 in-class hours
Homework
4+ hours per week. Learners will be expected to complete work related to the topic and skill learned in the lesson and discuss it with the teacher while other students work at the conclusion of each class. (However, if learner/parent prefers to participate passively by attending class only, that is also ok upon communication with Amber). Assignments are all visual representations of their design, and may take as little as 1 hour, but could take many more if the student is inspired to "run with it." Architecture is a great alternative to TV and social media. ;) PLEASE NOTE: this class is simulating a college-level course, so it is best for mature learners who can handle complex instructions, fast-paced learning and are able to time-manage homework assignments. If a learner falls behind, the videos and provided slideshows will help them catch up. That said, I'm very available to questions outside of class time, and as long as the learner puts in effort, they will do great in the class and learn a lot.
Assessment
Assessment is via teacher reviews of student work each meeting. There is a final review on the last day of class in which other learners may also contribute their feedback to the design. If your learner is taking this for class credit, please contact me before the class begins to give me the details and I'd be happy to give them a grade according to the rubric you need.
Grading
Grades on number or letter scale can be offered for overall performance by request.

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Don't miss the opportunity to practice the design process with a skilled and friendly Columbia and UC Berkeley graduate and instructor in this exciting course which builds upon the architectural skills taught in the Architecture Career Discovery Course by reviewing previously taught skills, introducing new drawing techniques and incorporating other important architectural topics such as sustainability.

NOTE: If you have not completed the Architecture Career Discovery Course yet, please see my profile for links to several formats you can take. If you have previous experience with architectural design in other courses, you should be able to complete this course with the help of extra video tutorials I will provide in order to catch you up on any concepts I teach in the discovery course but perhaps you were not taught in your course.

**Class Structure**
There are 8 meetings over a 4 week period. Meetings are 90 minutes long, with 60 min dedicated to learning a new skill or design technique, and 30 min reviewing student work in a "desk critique" structure, exactly like design studio courses in architecture school in college.
Learning Goals
Learners will have the rare chance to build on their newly-acquired design skills while also gaining new ones and participating in a college-style classroom experience.

Learner will need to use their existing Google Drive account to make a Google Slide presentation. If they do not have one, they may create one or use a parent's account. Additionally, learners will need a free account with SketchUp or another 3D modeling software of their choice to make their design in the computer.
Supply List
No new materials are needed for this advanced course, except for common household items such as colored pencils and a thin, black marker. However, if you did not take the previous course, a comprehensive materials list is found by navigating to https://cutt.ly/Architecture_Discovery_Materials .

Assuming that many of the supplies you will already have at home, the rest should cost around $45-60 and are available at any craft store or online at Amazon. In the above link, there are Amazon links to each material.

When I was 16, I took a similar architecture career discovery course that cemented my conviction to study architecture. Now I'd like to return the favor! During my architectural studies at Columbia University and UC Berkeley, as well as afterwards, I was fortunate to teach many design courses, ranging from visual representation, construction, and environmental design, to sacred landscapes and design studios. I have also taught over 20 online design courses.
