Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Students will create an architectural firm in our Minecraft City and embark on a project for a client. Each client is a company (supermarket chain, football franchise, bank etc...) that is looking for a specific type of skyscraper or building complex to be built with a specific architectural style and certain requirements. As we study architectural styles and techniques, the student companies choose which client they will work for and then create the requested design as their new city expands. 

Meanwhile, each student's company must also invent a new product or promotion for their client. As we study marketing and advertising techniques, students create a marketing campaign, magazine ad, billboard and TV commercial for their newly-created product. They even market it to students in other cities within our Minecraft state. The final project will be to create an video a TV commercial to present to the class. Students can act in the commercial themselves or direct family, friends, lego minifigures, dolls or whatever they choose.

Class Components:
Day 1: Our Minecraft city, creating your architectural firm, considering client letters, modernist vs. classical architecture,  building your modernist or classical house
Day 2: Choosing Your Client Projects, Initial Client Project Plans, Budgeting Your Project, more on modernist vs. classical architecture, finishing houses, Voting in the Classical/Modern housing contest
Day 3: 6 Marketing techniques (comparison ads, testimonials, special deals, celebrity endorsements, beautify, funny/silly), magazine ads, working on client projects, Using Google Drawings
Day  4:Creating a TV commercial script, creating your ad, finishing magazines ads on Google Drawings, Working on Your Client Project, TV commercial examples
Day 5: Working On Your Client Projects, Sharing Magazine Ads, Working on Our City Planning, Final Project and presentations

Other Details

Supply List
Students will need to download Minetest, the free public domain version of Minecraft. This is a free program and has worked really great for our purposes. We provide technical support as you download the program.
They will also need to use Google Sheets, although they don't necessarily need a Google account to do this.

    Right Brain Curriculum is a Massachusetts-based education company offering engaging, project-based online learning programs. Our mission is to create outstanding, student-centered enrichment programs that allow children to experience real life in a fun, engaging learning atmosphere. Currently, we run four different versions of our Metrocraft class, a civics-based program that takes place in a Minecraft-like world. 
    
    Right Brain Curriculum is managed by Matt Bowling, Education Director and Savvy Reuben, Director of Teaching & Learning
    
    Matt holds a Master's in Education Administration with Principal's license from UMass Boston as well as a Master's in Elementary Education from Northwestern University. Matt has more than 15 years experience as a classroom teacher for grades 2, 3, 5 and 7 in both public and private schools in California and Massachusetts. He has served as a Director of Curriculum and Instruction in both public and private schools in the Boston area.
    
    Savvy has more than ten years experience in education, working in private, public and charter schools in New York City and Boston. 
    Her education focused on  teaching, curriculum planning, classroom management and a specialization in autism/intellectual disabilities. She attended Trinity College and Teacher's College of Columbia University.
    She absolutely loves teaching and wants every class to be a unique, submersive, and positive experience where students feel free to be creative, take risks, and have a whole lot of fun while learning something new :)
