Class Experience

Explore with me, the fantastic story of how archeologists discovered one of the oldest board games known today.

This true tale of discovery is a fun introduction to archeology and ancient history. Learning about the discovery of a game we can still play today brings history to life, and gives us a real, tangible connection to history.

We will discuss some basic facts about archeology, and then we will focus on studying the specific archeological dig in which several board games were discovered to be from ancient Mesopotamia. We will learn how it took scientists 60 years, and a bit of luck to discover how the game was played. Learning about this interesting find will help us understand how and why we study past civilizations.

The majority of our time, even as we chat about history, will be spent crafting our own version of the game from polymer clay such as sculpey. (construction paper works as a substitute), and learning to play.

Learning Goals

Students will gain an introductory knowledge of archeology.
Students will become familiar with a specific archeological expedition, and what those scientists learned about ancient Mesopotamia.
Students will also practice their art while working with polymer clay, and embellishing their own gameboard.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm an avid reader, and an author.
I was never so surprised in all my life as when my son told me he "just wasn't into reading" and that he thought "writing was the worst part of school." I had to think quick before he missed out on all the magic that I knew was waiting for him within the pages of books.
And so family book club was born. And then books and friends, and soon my house was overflowing with reluctant readers bouncing up and down and waiting desperately to tell Miss Tammi all their favorite bits from last week's reading.
I have spent ten years coaxing children into eager readers and confident writers. I love to watch those smiles light up when they realize there is a whole hidden world inside of books. In that world they never need to try to fit in, or please other people. In that world they are welcomed, they are wanted, and they are inspired.
