Class Experience

Welcome designers!
Do you enjoy drawing houses or buildings? Do you want to learn more about the social forces of architecture? This is a one week camp that will encompass learners to actively participate in architectural skills.

Day 1: Architecture Elements
The first day of this camp, learners will engage in the beginning elements of architecture: line, shape, form. First, we tackle what architecture is and how it is related to the grand field of design. Next we will look at the examples of line, shape, and form by looking at modern architecture. This simple form of design utilizes line, shape, and form very well in many design. Through this, we will examine the architecture, how the design incorporates the initial elements. After we will have a drawing activity of practicing making lines, shape, and creating form.

Day 2: Architecture Elements
We will cover the final 4 elements of architecture: color, contrast, empty space, and texture. We will cover the color wheel with an optional handout for learners to download and complete. For texture, we will look at brick, concrete, wood, and observe how they make us feel or what look do they have. We will see contemporary and older homes and also look at Santorini architecture.
The drawing activity will be for learners to create their texture journal. We will use paint, markers, pencils, sponges, brushes and explore how to create different textures.

Day 3: Sustainability
Landscape designing can make one of the most sustainable impacts in design. However, architecture has also made lots of headway in sustainability. So lets talk about the ways we are sustainable! We can be create with landscape through roof top gardens, region appropriate plants, succulent planting. We can also use regional sensitive materials or create design that incorporates solar panels or use sun and wind patterns to better help design. We will also be looking at sustainability from a architectural experience and look at reuse projects. For our skill, learners will create a house/building structure out of toothpicks and mini-marshmallows.

Day 4: Design
This day we will cover more principles of a variety of design disciplines. We will cover principles in landscape, urban, interior. For leftover time, students will begin to design their own project for presentations. Our art activity will be learners making a paper house.

Day 5: Final Day
We will briefly review what we learned. Learners will be asked to list things they found interesting. The last portion of course will be learners conducting presentations for the last day.

My name is Melissa Guter and I am passionate about education. I received my masters degree in school counseling. I also have my bachelors degree in sociology. My passion topics are mostly social emotional learning, college & career readiness, student success skills, history, planning, architecture and understanding how those subjects intertwine. I believe that each student deserves to be seen as an individual with unique needs that should be met each day. I have worked in education for about a decade. I began working as a university advisor and got to experience issues that adult students face. Once I started working at the K-12 level, I got to experience the many struggles they endure and try to help them. It has been my passion to help each family. I have vast familiarity with multiple homeschool programs, philosophies, and curriculum since I have been homeschooling for the last 6 years. It is my passion to ensure that children are building themselves up and identify their own needs.
