In this ongoing, once a week course, we will practice Arabic conversation in the Levantine dialect. Class will be conducted in a mix of English and Arabic to help beginners ease into the language. Topics covered will vary from week to week, and will usually be focused on school subjects including language arts, math, science, social studies, music, and art. I implement story-telling and drawing as a way to solidify vocabulary, and so students can expect to create an ongoing vocabulary list that they should keep notes on! I will also always post class slides to the classroom page, so they will be there for reference. Topics are also open to parent and student suggestion, and students are especially encouraged to suggest topics for the class. The class will meet for 30 minutes, and will always commence with a short warm up and check in to make sure all students feel comfortable and ready to speak in Arabic. The rest of class will be focused on question and answer style conversation, and a lot of communication with each other, so students should be ready to talk to each other. As the instructor, I will pose questions for students to answer and guide a discussion based on that answer to promote vocabulary building and reinforcing in Arabic. I am very patient, and I encourage them to make mistakes freely and not feel shy or embarrassed about making mistakes. Learners will interact with me and each other for the entirety of the class. Note: This class does not teach reading or writing in Arabic, but we will often write words out phonetically in English to help remember vocabulary. Learners should have an interest in Arabic, but do not need to have any previous Arabic experience. This class is for beginners!
Learning Goals
Students will improve their vocabulary and confidence in speaking Levantine Arabic in a variety of topics with the goal of enhancing their vocabulary and conversation skills. A side-effect may be that they will learn about other topics as well! :)
