Aquarium Science
Class experience
This will be a one on one class via a socratic method which uses students' understanding of fishes natural habitats and how they can be best replicated in a home aquarium. Visuals of the nitrogen cycle, the carbon cycle, and details regarding the solubility of oxygen gas will be shared via colorful slideshow created by my aquatic science students. Details will be provided on the benefits of bacteria in the aquarium and how the process of the nitrogen cycle is key to keeping new fish alive. ...
Students will learn: establishing and maintaining beneficial bacterial colonies in the aquarium, chemical, biological and mechanical filtration, temperature and pH regulation, how to test your water, how to select fish appropriate for your aquarium.
I am the Vice President of the Aquarium Society and have kept fish my entire life. I maintain between 24 and 36 aquariums and aquaponics systems throughout the year with a variety of tropical, saltwater, freshwater and brackish fish. I am a certified aquatic science instructor and have taught that subject in both Texas and North Carolina. I am also the sponsor for the Aquarium club at the high school where I teach. I love to use my aquariums to teach biology, chemistry and even physics and math!
