Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Intermediate Level
In this class, we will apply grammar skills using the IEW methods. Students should have completed at least Book 3 in the IEW series to be successful in this class. Students may enroll if they have used another grammar method, but they should be at middle-school level. We will identify and mark verb clauses, Subject-Verb pairs, prepostional phrases, adjectives, adverbs, interjections, and nouns of direct address.

Specifically to IEW, we will use and discuss the who/which clause, strong verbs, quality adjectives, and the 6 IEW Sentence Openers. We will use the same markings from IEW (and the colors for parts of speech from my previous classes).

This story is NOT part of the IEW series of books like Nose Tree, Town Mouse, Robin Hood, and Frog Prince. However, I chose a story similar in length and format to the other books to give students additional practice with this method.

I have chosen the book of Ruth because it is a short, compact story with action that appeals to middle school students. Ruth moves to a new country with only her mother-in-law, learns to support her family, and eventually marries.

I first copied the text exactly, and then formatted it into 22 sessions of grammar, very similar to the IEW grammar format. Then I created some grammatical errors. Students will correct the errors before and during class. The meaning and text of the story will not change.

Learning Goals

Students will continue to systematically practice grammar in the context of a continuous story.
