Class Experience

Applied Music Theory & Composition | Level 1 | 8 Weeks

Are you new to music theory? Would you like to learn how to create and write your own rhythm and melodies?

In this introductory music theory class, we will explore the basics of music notation by learning to improvise, compose, and write our own musical ideas.

In each class, I will share a slide presentation to introduce all the new symbols and music theory concepts that we will be focusing on for the day, and then we will practice what we have learned through piano playing (or your choice of instrument), improvising, composing, and writing notation to express our own music.

Day 1: Musical Alphabets, Keyboard & Graphic Notation
Day 2: Staff, Steps & Skips
Day 3: Treble Clef
Day 4: Bass Clef
Day 5: Grand Staff
Day 6: Rhythm - Quarter, Half & Whole Notes
Day 7: Rhythm - Quarter, Half & Whole Rests
Day 8: Music Analysis & Composition Project

For the piano playing activity, I will be demonstrating all the music theory concepts on the piano and students are welcome to join me in practicing and composing their own rhythm and melodies for any instrument of their choice.

As we learn to create and notate our own music, students will be invited to share their work with their classmates, and for those who are comfortable, we will take turns to play and perform each other's rhythm and melodies to support, inspire, and apply our new understandings of music theory into performing practice.

No prior experience in music theory, reading notation, piano playing and/or other instruments is required.

All students interested in learning to read and write music notation are welcome.

Applied Music Theory & Composition consists of 3 Levels:
Level 1: For students new to music theory
Level 2: For students with background in treble/bass clef notes
Level 3: For students with one or more years of instrument and/or theory background

Other theory/composition classes:
Applied Music Theory (One time or ongoing private class)
Theory Fun | Melody, Rhythm & Harmony (Ongoing group class for beginner students)

Dear Outschool students and parents,

Thank you for your interest in my arts-based piano and applied music theory classes and I’m so happy to be exploring creative ways of exploring music and piano playing with the Outschool community.

I am a pianist, teacher, and educational researcher with over 20 years of music and piano teaching experiences. I completed my PhD in Curriculum Studies, specializing in music education and arts-based research methodologies.

Based on my doctoral research, I have been developing my own arts-based piano and music theory curriculum that integrate piano improvisation, stories, poems, and/or drawings to encourage, support, and inspire children’s own unique, individual ways of exploring music and learning to play the piano.

In our piano classes, we will learn to play the piano by creating our own music, improvise new sound effects on the piano to accompany the storybooks, read/write poetry as inspirations for our piano playing, and lots of drawings to express our musical ideas.

In our theory classes, we will learn to read, write, and compose our own beautiful melodies and harmonies together.

If you have any questions and/or would like more information about my current and/or upcoming new piano and theory classes, please contact me and I'm happy to connect with you.

Thank you everyone and I look forward to creating many beautiful, fun music, drawings, poems, and stories with you!

Happy piano playing and music writing~
