Applied Maths: Geometry | Helping Students Visualize, Not Memorize
What's included
1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
Students will apply the skills they have learned in Geometry to work through an open-ended problem requiring them to formulate their thinking, think creatively and critically, collaborate, and explain their thinking. Problems will include topics such as: Pythagorean Theorem, parts of Circles, Trigonometry, Area, Volume, Constructions, Parts of Triangles. Although each problem is independent from previous/future sessions, students will have an opportunity to provide input for future topics covered. **This class has no current learners, so the first two learners will be able to determine which week they would like to begin the cycle** Week 1: Constructions *need protractor/compass/straight edge* Week 2: Angles Week 3, 4, 5: Transformations Week 6, 7: Congruence Week 8, 9, 10, 11: Similiarity Week 12: Radicals Week 13, 14: Trigonometry Week 15, 16 : Two-Dimensional Geometry Week 17: Volume Week 18, 19, 20, 21: Using Algebra in Geometry Week 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28: Circles Each session will being with a "bell ringer" to get their minds ready for the section. They will then be presented a video/picture where they will have an opportunity to formulate their own thinking on the topic and goal of the problem. They will also be given an opportunity to estimate the solution. The biggest chuck of time will be spent solving the problem. They will be able to collaborate or work independently. We will then share our strategies and watch a video/picture of the solution. Although I am very involved and believe in a growth mindset, I also believe students should be given time to work using their strategies. If a student is "stuck" I will encourage them to get as far as they can before I jump in and guide them using THEIR strategy. I also like to work through the problem with the students. This allows me hold back from guiding them using MY strategy and giving hints which aren't usually necessary. This class requires students to be currently enrolled or previously enrolled in high school Geometry
Learning Goals
Students will use their prior knowledge of Geometry to develop flexible knowledge, intrinsic motivation and skills in effective problem-solving, student directed learning and effective collaboration.

PHILOSOPHY
Hi all you eager learners out there! I'm Kristen Bennett and my outlook to learning is to make mistakes, explore different strategies, ask "why," and above all - have FUN!
BACKGROUND
I hold a California Teaching Certification in Mathematics Education (grades 6-12), and a Masters Degree in Mathematics Education K-8. I have extensive experience teaching in US public schools, and have taught for the last four years at top-level international schools in Tokyo, Japan.
In 2020, I decided to change my primary role as a teacher in the classroom, to being a full-time mom to take care of my two daughters. After making an international move from Tokyo back to the United States with my family, I realized half of my heart belongs to being a teacher and supporting the growth of eager learners like you. Outschool happened to be a great platform to enable me to do that.
STYLE
My classes focus on making mathematics relevant to you. I am a non-traditional teacher. I use research-based methods that encourage discourse, problem solving, engagement and critical thinking. The activities chosen are well thought out to ensure they are current, applicable in the real world, and incorporate multiple mathematical skills, instead of "just one".
LET'S GET STARTED!!
I have helped thousands of students all over the world to understand and elevate their knowledge of mathematics. Whether it's to get ahead, catch up , or just prepare for examinations, I welcome and encourage ALL learners to join me in building mathematical confidence you can "count" on!
Note: ALL OF THE CLASSES ARE WELCOMED TO REQUEST SCHEDULING.
So, what are you waiting for? Let's Get Started!!
