In this course students will learn to format a paper in APA style, learn how to properly cite sources, review grammar rules and learn how they apply to APA writing. Students will also practice writing clear and concise summaries of various genres of texts. All of this will come together in a final essay at the end of the course.

I have discovered that even though APA Style papers are required in a lot of college writing, it isn't being taught in many of the schools. Schools teach MLA, which is a great tool to have, but APA is what your student will need to get them through college writing. Not only will they have writing classes, but they will have to write papers in many courses throughout their college experience.

APA can be intense to a new learner. There are a lot of rules! In this course, based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, I break it down into easy-to-follow chunks of information. There is an overwhelming amount of information in this book, but we won't cover it all. I will focus on the items that apply to all APA papers, so your student has a solid foundation to start writing.

In my experience with students, I have also noticed that many of them struggle with writing clear, concise and organized summaries. I have written so many summaries during my time in college, I can't even count them! So, I have included writing summaries in this course as well. We will incorporate APA style into these summaries. This way students can practice writing summaries and applying APA rules at the same time.

Each week I will teach a lesson on various components of APA style (see syllabus for class breakdown). We will practice the skill, learn to apply the skill and discuss various texts and how to decide what information to use from them in our own writing. There will be short homework assignments each week and a handout outlining the key points of that week's lesson will be provided.
