Homework

1-2 hours per week. Students will work through practice multiple choice questions and produce practice essays during the course.

Grading

Parents will be apprised of their student's progress and will be informed of any struggles or difficulties they encounter. I will provide feedback and numerical scores for the sample questions students complete. Ultimately, the measurable progress will be evident in the student's comfort with the exam and eventual score.

Advanced Level

This course will help students prepare for the AP English Language and Composition exam.  We will examine each section of the exam: first, the multiple choice questions, and then the essays.  Each class will begin with some lecture, with frequent examples and practice questions to check understanding.

My teaching style is very interactive: I encourage students to ask questions to clarify information.  When we discuss practice questions, we will focus not only on why a certain answer is correct, but why the other answers are incorrect.

At the beginning of the course (which may have 1-4 students), I will ask questions to ascertain a student's current level, areas for improvement, and learning style/needs.

Lesson 1:

AP LANG Basics

 This lesson will focus on familiarizing students with the format of the AP LANG exam.  Instructor will also spend time talking with each student to ascertain proficiency, confidence, and areas for improvement.

Lesson 2:

AP LANG Multiple Choice

 The first portion of the AP LANG exam is multiple choice - there are 45 questions, which must be answered in 60 minutes.  We'll discuss strategies for approaching these questions and complete several practice questions.

Lesson 3:

AP LANG Multiple Choice (continued)

 Students will learn how to approach the multiple choice section, including time management, process of elimination, how to avoid traps, etc.  At each step, we will review several illustrative examples and complete several practice questions.

Lesson 4:

AP LANG Multiple Choice (wrap-up)

 We will wrap up our discussion of the multiple choice section by reviewing a number of sample questions and addressing student questions.

Learning Needs

While this course is not designed expressly for students with learning challenges, effort will be made to tailor content & instruction to each student's learning style and needs. Students should be sure to alert me to needs/accommodations.

Supply List

All materials will be provided to students via attachments in the Outschool classroom.

External Resources

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I have nearly 20 years of classroom experience teaching a variety of high school level courses: Honors 11, Academic level English in grades 9-12, Career level English in grades 9-12, Journalism, Speech, Diversity in American Culture.

I also have more than 12 years of experience with one-to-one and small-group tutoring - both in person and virtual.  This experience has focused on test prep (AP, SAT, PSAT, HSPT, ACT, etc.) as well as reading comprehension, general essay readiness, and the preparation of college essays/written responses for application.

Finally, I have taught several courses on the college level, including Composition and an African American Women Writers seminar.
