In this 12-week course, students will learn to write three different types of essays to prepare them for college and the AP Language and Composition exam. Weeks 1-4 Students will learn how to write a rhetorical analysis essay. In week one, students will learn how to identify and analyze rhetorical choices and how to divide a test in sections to understand the writer's line of reasoning. I week two, students will learn how to construct thesis statements and how to embed evidence into their commentary. In week three, students will be provided with student samples to help them better understand the AP Lang rubric. For homework, students will be asked to write a rhetorical analysis essay. In week four, the teacher will review the student essays and offer feedback. The teacher will also offer recommendations for next steps so that students can continue to practice these skills on their own. Weeks 5-8 During this portion of the course, students will practice responding to multiple prompts. The teacher will explain the AP Lang rubric and students will examine sample essays. Students will have in-class time to brainstorm and write. However, students will likely need to complete the assignments for homework. Students will be encouraged to share their work with the class in order to receive teacher and peer feedback on their writing. Weeks 9-12 During the final portion of the course, students will learn how to write a synthesis essay for the exam. Students will also learn how this skill leads to writing a research paper. The teacher will show students how to find credible sources. Students will have in-class time to research the topic of their choice. Students will write a 3-5 page research paper on the topic of their choice (in either MLA or APA format.) The teacher will provide feedback on the research papers through the Outschool platform. While students we be provided with in-class writing time, students will need to complete these assignments outside of class. Students will be encouraged to share their work in class. Additionally, students will be encouraged to share their work with the teacher through the Outschool platform in order to receive additional feedback. Given that the class is divided by topics, it is important that students keep up with the writing.
Students will learn how to write the three types of essays on the AP Lang exam. This class is designed to supplement students' existing instruction. However, no experience with AP Language is necessary, as this course will review the fundamental skills. While this class is designed to help students prepare for the AP Language exam, students interested in an honors high school English class will also find value in this class.
Students will be provided with the passages and prompts. For the final paper, students will be conducting their own research; however, the teacher can recommend free online resources if needed.
