Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
It's no secret, this class is a personal favorite of mine to teach, due to my background in creative writing and literary theory! I have completed by bachelor's in creative writing while minoring in literary theory and will begin my master's degree this fall!

This unique perspective allows me to guide students through the exploration of 35 classic literature authors and their works. We delve into excerpts from 35 different books, which serves as a foundation for enhancing reading comprehension and writing skills.

The writing skills we focus on span both creative and formal writing. They range from character development to crafting strong thesis statements and completing essays. (For a full and detailed breakdown of class material, please refer to the syllabus.)

To ensure long-term retention of the material, we have a review week at the end of each month. This allows students to revisit past material and also ensures they can join, pause, and come back without missing anything. This review loop method has proven to be effective in helping students learn the material beyond just passing a test. After all, these are writing skills that I hope they take with them to college and beyond.

I have personally designed this curriculum to enhance a wide variety of writing skills. This includes revisiting the basics of sentence variation, setting and exposition writing, exploring various essay forms, and getting a glimpse into the expectations of college-level writing.

In addition to writing and grammar, the course also focuses on effective reading comprehension skills. Your student will learn to create inferences, ask relevant questions, form mental images, and identify the main point in a text. These skills are crucial for understanding and interpreting information.

Lastly, we will be working on vocabulary by introducing five new SAT-level words each week. This not only increases their chances of scoring higher on the SATs but also contributes to their proficiency as a writer.

Some writing assignments will have to be worked on outside of class and details of these assignments will be posted to the classroom page.

It's going to be a great school year and I look forward to seeing students' continued growth in these areas! :)

Parental Guidance
Please note, I have pre-screened all reading excerpts to make sure of clean language and age-appropriate topics, however, if students are interested in reading the entire book outside of class once being introduced to it, please do your own research to determine whether your student is ready for that specific novel. YouTube is used in class for recorded interviews and biographies of authors. abcya and education.com are used for fun game reviews
Supply List
Students should all have Googledocs or another word program for typing in class. Document should be labeled AP-ENGLISH and be saved so they can open the same document each week to add to the notes. This keeps an easy showcase of projects worked on throughout the year!
