Class Experience

Students will strengthen their Latin skills expected from AP classes and IB programs by the reading of passages from required Roman authors, and from the practice of textual analysis. Students will focus on reading comprehension, translation, Roman contexts, textual analysis, and argumentation. This course will complement your regular AP and IB classes, and supplement your teachers' lessons with additional study.
All course content will be taught with age-appropriate passages. None of the "sexually explicit" love poetry will be read in class. All expected course content can be covered without these few poems. See my notes under Parental Guidance.
Week by week, students will focus on reinforcing and expanding the study completed for their regular AP and IB Latin classes. Students may submit specific questions in advance of their Outschool class to hone their skills. I encourage you to share with me your class syllabus so that I can follow along and match our work with your own. Please note that the same class will be offered three times a week, for your convenience. Students may sign up for all classes or only those that they desire. Additional sections, authors, and topics are available upon request.
The 2016 IB Classical languages guide is still current and due for revision in 2023.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will receive individual and collective feedback based on AP and IB rubrics. Students may always ask me specific questions, and I strongly encourage them to do so.

The back cover notes of Lectiones Memorabilies Volume III warns of the love poetry, "some of which is sexually explicit." See my remarks under Teacher Expertise.
For this Outschool class I will use Bolchazy-Carducci Publisher's Lectiones Memorabiles III (ISBN 978-86516-858-9), and Lectiones Memorabiles IV (ISBN 978-0-86516-859-6). These books provide sample author passages for the IB Latin Syllabus for the May 2021 exams. Vocabulary is included. They were "developed independently from and [are] not endorsed by the International Baccalaureate (IB)." Both books also recommend Allen & Greenough (revised 1916) as the grammar of choice. The dictionaries of Charlton Lewis or Cassell's are helpful to have. The Bolchazy books are relevant to both programs. I have many Latin texts on my shelves that your regular teacher may be using with you. Just let me know in advance and I will synch texts with you.
