Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 6
Welcome to Another Reading and Writing with Purpose book club!

In this book club, we will meet eight times to discuss our books. We will read one book a week, and students will respond with a written reading response each time we meet and be ready to discuss the stories with their peers. Students will be encouraged to think deeper about what they read and to write their own thoughts down to share with the class. I will provide clear instructions on each week's reading response. My main goal is to have students dig deeper into analyzing a novel and connect various book elements. Topics that we will cover include:

Theme
Foreshadowing
Characters
Character Motivation
Genre
Conflict
Setting
Narrator

Students will cover these topics during our discussion and through the weekly reading responses. There will be one reading response due every week, and students will have a rubric to help them with this process. Reading responses will need to be a minimum of five sentences, so students should be able to write a paragraph on their own before enrollment. Students will choose their own reading response each week from a list I provide to take ownership of the process.

The books we will be reading and discussing are:

Meeting 1 - Falling Short by Ernesto Cisneros

Meeting 2 - The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton

Meeting 3 - A Night Divided by Jennifer Nielsen

Meeting 4 - The Girl in White by Lindsay Currie

Meeting 5 - The Patron Thief of Bread by Lindsay Eagar

Meeting 6 - The Fort by Gordon Korman

Meeting 7 - The Ghoul of Windydown Vale by Jake Burt

Meeting 8 - Two Degrees by Alan Gratz

This class is for the student who devours books, and because of this, we will be reading one book every week and discussing the essential themes in each book. Students who enjoy sharing their thoughts with others either on the microphone or via the chat box will do well in this class. Students who do not like to participate may not enjoy this class or feel very successful with it. I expect students to discuss, engage, and pay attention during class.

Please note that my classes need at least 4 students to run due to the discussion element. If you enroll your student please consider sharing the class with others through email or social media. Thank you!

Learning Goals

Book clubs in middle school and high school are a great way to teach students to form and share opinions with others which is an important skill to have as they get older. I run all book clubs so every student is able to answer questions that I pose and participate in the lively discussion. I am also aware that some students prefer to participate through chat than on a microphone. This is completely acceptable. My goal for the students is to get them to share their thoughts in whatever way they feel comfortable doing that.

I am passionate about books and have been running book clubs for homeschoolers for over ten years. Book clubs are a great way to prepare for high school level analysis and teach students how to articulate their thoughts about what they have read. And I love graphic novels and hopefully, by the end of this course, your student will too!
